Steve Perry tried to join another band in 78/79

Postby Gordon from Edinburgh » Sat Feb 02, 2008 11:08 am

Called Wild Horses - just read it in classic rock today - near fell off the toilet.....the band was formed by ex Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson - who did a tour with Journey....and also Jimmy Bain ex of Rainbow - the story goes that Perry phoned them and asked to join....was he that unhappy at that stage?????????????????

Ummmm...ANYTHING with Steve would have been / was / would be awesome. But Steve and Neal together between 77-83 was one of the top five songwriting tandems of all time.

One of my favorites is the very first song they wrote together, "Patiently". I wish I could've heard Perry sing it live but I had chills going down my spine when Deen sang it at the 30th anniversary show here in Indy.

Its not available on-line yet mate - i subscribe to Classic Rock so i get the mag a few days early - its an article in a section about "lost" bands - remember when they trashed Blackmore the last time they did this feature? Anyway - i will try to scan it with my phone - but not confident........

Love that one too, and this has to be my all-time favorite performance of it. Steve/Neal were just magic together. Perry's vocals just slay me in this one.......seems so damn effortless and crystal clear. :D

They wrote "Patiently" in about two hours. True story. First day they wrote together.

So beautiful. And, I love his look at the end of the song. Gads, I see that date 1978 and I wanna cry...I graduated H.S. 30 yrs ago! How is that possible - feels like yesterday?

For anyone interested, here's the best version of "Patiently" that Perry ever did, in my opinion. This is from Houston, 4/12/1980.

78-79, SP would have just joined Journey. Maybe he wanted to keep his options open. And Thin Lizzy toured with Journey in those days. Steve could have been very good friends with that guy. Maybe he was thinking about working in both bands. After all, he was quite the workaholic, writing-recording-touring, in those early years.

While I love seeing old Journey footage (especially Perry :) ) and the clip is great........that is probably one of my least favorite Journey songs though, to me the song just goes nowhere. :?
