OT: Van Halen - Live Without a Net

I became a VH fan because of the 5150 album and remember watching the videos from this show on MTV and MuchMusic. Anyway, I just bought the DVD for this show today and I've always thought the band had a ton of energy on stage back then. The show really rocks. Even the version of "Only One Way to Rock" is far superior to Hagar's solo version. The only bad thing I have to say about the show is that Hagar's guitar solos in "Love Walks In" are awful.

Anybody else dig this show or that era of the band?

Yessir, have that DVD myself. Van Halen is one of my top 3 favorite bands. Care to guess the other two? I think you'll be right on the money.

Always preferred VanHagar to VanRoth myself. Step up in quality I think. 5150 is a big part of my high school memory soundtrack. Great lineup, great fucking album. :D

That's my favorite VH album too. Love the Roth era as well though.

That whole album had a raw, spontaneous feel to it, which I think is exactly what happened in the studio. It certainly carried over to the live performances.

Journey and don't have any idea who the other would be.

That would be Boston. Evidently Tom Scholz has asked one Mr. Michael Sweet to continue that band.

"5150" was Van Halen's GREATEST work, EVER, in my opinion. While I certainly enjoyed the Roth era material, Hagar was simply a much better vocalist than Roth ever was, and 5150 really showed that off!

I found that strange.
I realize Hagar's a very good guitarist in his own right but if I recall right, Edward eschewed the Frankenstein (and the mini-Frankenstein he had going on on that tour) for keys/synths on both Love Walks In and WCTBL.

The only song that hasn't withstood the test of time for me from that album is, coincidentally the biggest hit from it, "Why Can't This Be Love". I never cared much for "Inside", either but I did used to really like WCTBL.

Indeed he did. Hagar played a lot of guitar on that tour and that diminished the longer he was in the band.

i think the best one with hagar was the F*U*C*K* album released in '91 right around the time wolfgang was conceived.

That was certainly a huge step back in the right direction after OU812, which was okay, just a bit disappointing after 5150.

As much as I LOVE 5150...FUCK is still the best overall for me followed by Balance. OU812 was great...but it just seemed too "Forced" and VERY low in the mix. But Source Of Infection and AFU will always remain up on my Favorite track list.

All-in-all a terrific live document, though, better than L:RH,RN which was off the FUCK tour.

Abitaman was gentleman enough to rip the audio of this dvd for me as well so's I can listen to it in the car.

Best of the dvd for me probably was Summer Nights.

Summer Nights and Love Walks In are my faves from that DVD... I actually like Hagar's solos on the songs there. Not as good as the studio ones (which for me are some of the finest solos of any VH song), but still fitting and unexpected. Little bit sloppy, but still nice for me.

That was also my favorite Van Hagar-era album. I love 5150 too, but to me, it was a very noisy album... lots of treble and Hagar shrieks, especially in the first track. That got on my nerves after a while. Haven't heard it in quite some time, but that's one thing that sticks in my memory.

I am a devoted Hagar fan...he offers me so much more than many artists - especially the 80s era. The recent stuff is ok/good, but away from what I prefer of him as a solo artist. I love his serious dark side so the Jimmy Buffet routine is harder to appreciate.

Van Hagar is in my Top 3 bands of all time. So much killer music and meaningful music within just 4 studio albums (sadly). 5150 is an all time classic and that Live show features a watershed moment for that band.

In fact, it really reminds me of Journey w/JSS and I think the same scenario was possible had it not been terminated.

But bottom line - some of my favourite music of all time thanks to Sammy and Eddie.

I am a huge Sammy fan, and appreciate both eras of VH, but there is something special about the Dave-fronted VH that the Sammy-fronted band could not capture, IMO. Sure, Sammy's the better singer, but Dave's voice is unique and his personality and showmanship were just as important as Eddie's guitar in making them a legendary band.

VHII song for song is the best VH album.
although i agree hagar is a better singer, those songs kikass,
there's 3/4 filler tracks on 5150.

Probably none -- I doubt Sammy would do it without Michael Anthony. Eddie wanted to exlude M.A. during the last reunion, and Sammy said he wouldn't agree to it unless they kept M.A. onboard.

Completely agree -- man, once they put out that song "Cabo Wabo", it just seemed to have launched his new musical mission. I don't hate all the new stuff particularly, but he's definitely become the next Jimmy Buffett. MUCH more prefer his older solo stuff. I also really enjoyed that solo album I Never Said Goodbye he put out shortly after joining V.H. (I think he still owed the record company one) -- the one he had Eddie play on. Can't remember too much about it other than the first two tracks ("When The Hammer Falls Down" and "Hands And Knees"), but loved them both!

"Give to Live" from that album was a Top 40 hit and, yes, Eddie played bass on that album.

Ahh, yes! I'd forgotten about "Give To Live", and also that Eddie has played bass instead of guesting on guitar.
