Even though this happened in Kansas, I must admit Deano came to mind. I haven't mastered pictures and such as of yet, but I'm working on it. (One reason why no avatar!) I surely do enjoy visiting this Journey forum and find it almost always gives me a good laugh. Of course, the wealth of music information is always welcome, too. From what I have gleaned from your postings, I am able to determine that yes, indeed, I am a loon.

The Good news:
It was a normal day in Sharon Springs, KS when a Union Pacific crew
boarded a loaded coal train to head on the long trek back to Salina.
The Bad news:
Just a few miles into the trip a wheel bearing became overheated and
melted off letting the truck support drop down and grind on top of the
rail creating white hot molten metal droppings to spew downward on the rail.
The Good news:
A very alert crew noticed a small amount of smoke about halfway back
in the train and immediately stopped the train in compliance with the rules.
The Bad news:
The train just happened to stop with the hot wheel on top of a wooden
bridge built with creosote ties and trusses...
RULES ARE RULES! So let's not allow common sense get in the way of a
good disaster!

Why are you busting on Deano? It wouldn't have mattered who was in charge of that rig.

That shit happens all the time. I got out of freight service back in 1990. I have had my share of overheated journal bearings. With Amtrak, you had better equipment and faster service but a lot more collisions.

I can't ever laugh at train derailments...hits too close to home. Sorry bud.

PS- fuck you Trailblazer! Like the engineer knew his 89th car had a hotbox problem and that is was sitting on a wooden trestle? Fuck off.

By the way, try to be a little more sensitive. You have any idea what it's like to hit someone and run over them? Think!

I never understand the folks that try to zip past Amtraks (in cars or on foot). Depending on the intersection, those trains are sometimes flyin by. I know the engineers try to stop but its not always possible.

I remember seeing one on the news that a lady was driving some type of panel truck and it was on the track and wouldn't start. Her passenger got out and ran but for some reason the driver didn't make it. (L.A. I think)

Another was a mom with a few kids in the Modesto area. Don't remember the details on that one but it was all over the news.

I can think of a couple others what's the point? Train versus any regular motor vehicle (including 18 wheeler) is not a contest, its suicide.
