She never was a great singer so what do you expect?
Just capitalizing on the American Idol coattails.

Wasn't she one of the early pioneers of 80's pop tarts who sang with what I call the "jail bait" voice? Most of them still sing that way, and Britney Spears is a perfect example... sings like a teasy, purry little 13-year old. I can never tell one from another, because they all sound exactly the same. I prefer real singers...

Paula gets a pass, though. I love her. :P

I just don't understand this...

Can someone explain the point of having a half time show that isn't a live performance of the song? Were the instruments recorded too? Song sounds like it was protooled to death. Is she too pitchy to sing live? Kind of hypocritical coming from not one but two american idol judges, no?

Most annoying...

At least she's still got it. I mean she's really hot, lol... :o

Catchy tune. Obvious computerized vox correction again. She'll never sing it live.

Just another example of a stupid public accepting style and pizazz over any real substance. Randy should be embarrassed.

Canned vocals, bad miming and a dull, uninspired dance track reminiscent of any other female R&B singer in the last 5 years.

Next!

Even better than that it was pre-recorded last week and tacked on to the event as live. Sh!teous in every way.

Loved the new song. Like it or not, this woman puts out hits. I've liked a lot of her work and the new song didn't disappoint.

Ok, great point, and brings up a question that any of our studio recording guys might answer. I hear this sound A LOT in pop vocals these days, but figured it was more of a glitzy effect -- like trying to make them sound kinda robotic or something. From what I understand, voice correction software can sound kinda similar... I have a Butch Walker CD where he makes fun of it. But surely it's just a trendy sound, too, right? I mean, I've heard them go back and take well-known songs and make dance versions of them and add that effect to the existing vocals.... Can anyone explain?

For the record, I HATE the sound... Also, making dance versions of good songs (like adding droning canned club beats) is the quickest way to ruin them for me...

Paula gets a free pass with me... She was one of the earliest pop-tarts, but was effective without having to be a stripper at the same time. I always had a crush on her.

Her real talent was as a dancer and choreographer, and she choreographed several other acts before she even got into music. Singing-wise, can't blame her for lip-synching. I was talking with someone recently (maybe it was a post here) who said it was nearly impossible to sing correctly while giving such a physically-demanding performance like a choreographed dance routine (though doesn't Madonna sing while dancing?) With pop-tartlets like that, I expect the lip-sync -- it's more about the show than the vocal performance.

isnt it more like Steve Vai judging other guitar players and their skills.. and when its his time to step back up to the plate he plays a record and just poses...

the funny thing is ,, steve vai is a bit of a poser..

Musical theatre performers handle complex dance routines with live vocals all the time, Cats and Starlight Express come to mind. They are trained performers though and not pro-tool whizz's (c) Neal Schon 2007.

Sounds like a flanger effect. Okay in small doses but horrible when abused ala Usher (acapella below)...

Oh heck - I liked it. Won't buy it but enjoyed watching it.

All those great Janet Jackson videos of the 80s? That was Paula Abdul's choreography.

The woman is 45 years old (born 1962) and she looks great, even if she is a bit of an airhead on AI.

Does she have Ann Wilson or Amy Lee's voice? Of course not.

She's just Paula - entertainment lite!
:D
