Good little set. Four songs:
American Girl
I Won't Back Down
Free Falling
Runnin' Down A Dream
Hope to see Springsteen do it next year. But uh, 10 songs please.

Well, it was no Stones and what in hell was "Free Falling" doing in there?
Should've gotten "She's A Woman In Love" in there, that thing is a rocker that smokes live.

The Stones were HORRIBLE when they did the Super Bowl halftime show.
It sounded like Richards and Wood were playing completely different songs at the same time.

at Free Fallin. When he started that I instantly sawTom Cruise singing in the car from Jerry Maquire.
You're right on about Woman in Love. One of their best songs. Here tis:

Bruce Springsteen? I'm starting to feel a bit queasy.

I liked the performance, if I had the chance to pick the setlist though it would’ve been as follows:
1. I Need To Know
2. Mary Jane’s Last Dance
3. Free Fallin’
4. American Girl
Like it or not “Free Fallin’” is one of his most popular songs. When I saw him in 2006 I couldn’t believe the response that song got. While it is not my favorite I had a hard time hearing his vocals over 16,000+ singing with him, it was an amazing thing to hear.

True, not a big Tom Petty fan, but always liked that one.

Word. The Stones blew dicks. Awful.

You need to expand your musical horizon there dickface. Bruce is loved worldwide. What you want, Journey, lol?

Yeah, I was hoping for, but not expecting, MJLD. I've always like that one a lot.

He may have a few fans out there, but I'm not one of them. Really can't stand him or Mellencamp. CJ Snare can run circles around them vocally.

...anything from Damn the Torpedoes (my favorite Petty album by a mile) would have been nice.
Springsteen is out for next year, since it seems they alternate genres for the show. Some boy band crap will be the show next year...maybe Menudo or Ill Divo.

Petty had our party rocking. THAT was a halftime show...for us late boomers. I guess any mention of doobage was censored. No substance malfunction this year.

What you got against him? He's a legend. One of the best songwriters and performers ever. You can't lump him in with Mellencamp 'cause there's no comparison.
Your vocal mention above. I used to think like that round the USA for Africa "We Are The World" stuff but I hadn't listened to a lot of his stuff yet. He may not have the range Perry had but what he can do with his voice is damn good. I enjoy it.
In this link here he didn't want to lipsync. Had a hidden mic so he could actually sing the song.

Love Is A Long Road kicks a huge amount of ass, too.
With that synth/keys intro and mid-song break that would've been perfect for the Supe.

He sounded pretty good... as good as you can sound at the SB. Hardly ever gonna see an act knock em dead... the hasty set-up, the acoustics, and probably the deafening volume of the crowd makes it hard to play a kickass live set. But it was fun to see Petty up there. Not among the most electrifying live acts (even tho I know his live show is revered by many), but still a lot better than The Rolling Gravestones.

Fuck that he sucked. Tom Petty can blow my big black cock. (I'm wearing my Michael Strahan Jersey right now!)
Just once, I wanna see a half time show that isn't done by a bunch of 2 feet in the grave dead rockers....or crappy top40 pop fuckers.

I enjoyed the hell out of TP. You have to give credence to these classic rockers that are doing it again. It makes me relive to good old days. It's just great to see.

I don't mind petty, but the group I was with watching the game, half left for food, the other half nearly fell asleep me included.
In fact I had to inject myself with a Diet Rockstar to wake up for the second half.
I had no idea you were Black? shit, I learn something new everyday on this website.

Never been a big Tom Petty fan, but thought it was a good performance. I thought the coolest part of the show was the neon arrow going across the field and piercing the heart-shaped stage. LOL

Bwahahaha...Dude, I'm caucasian. Last night, I was wearing a Strahan jersey, so I was black by proxy....I was also piss drunk. Saying "blow my big black cock" is certainly far more impressive than saying "blow my 1/2 italian, 1/4 russian, 1/4 polish pea-sized pecker"....

I thought Petty did well. It sure sounded pre-recorded to me, but maybe not. He did a lot better than I thought he would. I enjoyed it. The beard, though, wow, makes him look a 1000 years old.
Best Half Time Shows:
U2- Their performance was actually 'moving' for me. Not sure why, just was.
Prince- That little bastard plays some kick ass guitar. Hell of a showman too.
Paul- Because it's Paul.
Worst:
Timberlake/Janet
Aerosmith (who I love, but didn't dig them at all)
Stones- sloppy is too nice a word. Best I've ever seen Keef live was in the Chuck Berry flick he did. He plays great in that movie.
I haven't read this entire post yet, so forgive me if I'm covering already-spoken-of-territory:
Does it bug anybody else that the whole "concert vibe" of the halftime show seems so phony? I mean, just as they're about to start, they rush in all these kids that can NO WAY be huge Petty fans. And then they're zooming in all all the chick 'fans' singing the tunes. I dunno, that entire thing seems really artificle to me and has an 'attention whorish' quality to me. Does it to anybody else get that vibe? Does it bug anybody else?
It DOES blow me away at how fast they can move all that on and all that off during such a short time. Must be one helluva crew.

Yup. I'm with ya, I don't get it. The ONLY song of his I dig is Dark Side... uh, wait, that wasn't him
No, the only song of his I really like is Born to Run. That's a really good, well written song. Anything off Born in the USA is just terrible. I never got why that album was so huge. Sorry, guess this makes me a commie or something.

I SO AGREE.....it's awful to say that that's all I could think about through the entire performance...How'd they put that stage together so fast????

Proabably why "You Don't Know How It Feels" wasn't part of the set list! lol!! I would have much rather heard "A Women In Love" over "Free Falling" too, but it was the Superbowl half time, you had to know he wasn't going to do anything but the biggest hits and the ones people recognize instantly. Still he sounded really good and I'm sure he was stoned out of his mind! lol!
P.S. Springsteen DOES suck.

So Petty lipped huh?
Didn't know that.
