OT- Something I Saw Today

As I stood in line at Taco Bell today I saw this old guy steal a drink from the fountain. I started to say something to him, but upon closer inspection I realizeed he was probably homeless. His clothes were half decent, but his hair appeared as if it hadn't been washed for days.

I'm pretty sure I saw him taking some medicine which is probably why he slipped himself a drink. His only possessions were what appeared to be action figures?, a pack of cigarettes, and a photograph, but he didn't even have a sack to put them in. He only stayed for a minute. I felt awful because I had no money to give him. I had just paid off a credit card and by the time I fully noticed him I had already used the little I had on lunch. There's a good chance that he wouldn't have even taken my money, but just the same I wish I had something to give him.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm not as heartless as I sometimes appear to be. As much as I am for personal responsibility I also realize there are some : the disabled, the sickly, mentally ill, etc who for whatever reason will never be totally self supporting. I have no problem helping those kinds of people. That is what the safety net was built for. But there are a good many of totally sound mind and body who decided for whatever reason that they neeeded that new car or that new house with the ridiculous loans and ARM mortgages, those whose decided to not use birth control or hold off on having kids until they were making more than minimum wage, illegal immigrants, and those who flat out refuse to work, we shouldn't be helping these people AT ALL.

There are a lot of opportunities in this country, you just need the will to take advantage of them.

Nicely said. I agree completely. :D

Just because a person believes in personal responsibility doesn't mean they don't care about people who are truly in need and you shouldn't have to explain that. Anyone who thinks otherwise can suck it!

You should have invited him over to my house...I offer booze, vittles that confound every man's cholesterol count, and midnight hockey on the neighbor's frozen pool...we always can use a goaltender.

Of course not. I honestly could care less. I just wanted to point out that this society has engineered itself to show pity to the wrong people.

You don't seem heartless to me, you just don't like to have your taxpaying money wasted like me. Where I work, we share the parking lot with the free maternity clinic. You see these people that appear to be illegals, but drive up in their fancy Lincoln Navigators with spinner rims getting free medical services for their 5 children on my dime. Day in and day out I see it. It is not an isolated incident. So I completely hear what you're saying.

And how is it you know this? Do you sit down and talk to each person who is down on his or her luck? Look, we don't have super powers. We don't know everyone's story. However, I bet you the majority of people want to work, rather than sit on their asses. My point is you can't legislate morality.

You cons are heartless. All of you. Enjoy the ass whipping you have coming in November.

Dean read my post above. I witness it EVERYDAY. If they can afford a brand new Navigator, they should NOT be entitled to free medical or anything else free that comes out of MY tax dollars.

"You can't legislate morality," One Nation states: "The idea that you can't legislate morality is ludicrous. Morality is always legislated. It is one of the few things that ever is legislated. Legislation doesn't change character, only behavior, but that's all it's meant to do...in every society, religion shapes morals, and morals shape laws.

Of course you sit down and talk to them, but I honestly don't see why I or anyone else for that matter should feel sorry for people in situations that were preventable. Again I speak of preventable. Large Mortgages and outlandish spending are preventable. Procreating before you can take care of yourself is preventable. Heck, even staying at a low wage job is preventable. You don't have to possess a big fancy four year or even master's degree for that matter to make good money. It's all in what your skill set is, and how much that skill set is valued by the market place. There are people out there, dental hygenists for example who make excellent money with two year degrees or less. Community college is a great alternative for those with little money who want to develop a great skill set.

I'm all for a safety net, but not for the free for all mess that we've created.

No, my bullshit broad post ruined Scary's thread.

I am sorry for generalizing with my "heartless" comment.

its so sad how many mentally ill people there are...

Taco Bell has pretty nice people there, they probably let him come in and have a rest,
one time I went thru the drive thru and then discovered I didn't have my purse=the manager
just excused me and said it was okay to drop it back by sometime-which I did.

No you're not. You were giving your opinion. This thread wasn't strictly for those who agree with me. I like the diversity. No one ruined my thread. These things evolve. Sometimes quite funnily.

Awe. Yeah, I'm pretty sure they knew it too. They didn;t say anything. And again, I wasn't going to say anything. It was quite obvious teh guy needed a rest. I wanted to give him what I bought to eat, but I was afraid I woudl just embarrass him.
