OT:An orignal tune from me.

Some of you might remember the Journey covers that I did and posted on here last year. Well since some of you seemed to dig them and encouraged me to keep at it I did and wrote some of my own stuff. This music sounds nothing like Journey (no vocal cartwheels here) and if i had to give it a label I would call it melodic hard rock. Im working on me demos at the moment and would really appreciate some feedback since I know you guys will tel me like it is. I consider myself to be a novice lyric writer and truth be told I hate doing lyrics so they might change if I group up with someone that does a better job with them. So I ask that if the lyrics seem weird to please listen past that and give me feed back on the music is self.

The recording is cheaply done and I recommend listening to it with windows media player with the WOW effect on a bit...

I am playing all the instruments in this track because finding like minded individuals where I live has proven to be impossible. The original music scene in Lousiville, Ky is thrash metal pretty much. Ya know , that shit that sounds like a bunch of old people in wheel chairs falling down a flight of stairs while someone screams at the top of their lungs ? Got that off my chest...

Hope you like it.

Hey,that's a great song! I'm impressed.Even more because you play all the instruments! 8)

As I hear it here,I think the voice track should be just a little bit more "in front" in the overall mix.
Other than that I have to say that despite the "cheap" recording you say you did,the song sounds pretty loud and clear! :)

I truly hope you'll find a nice bunch of musicians and record some of this good stuff you're writing.

p.s. Is trash metal still alive out there?? :? I was hoping it has died already. No one likes that shit anyway.

Most Excellent ~ GOOD JOB!!

I like the fact that you played all your own instruments...wish I could.

Also, you did every vox-line separately, right? Nice double - then 3 PART - harmonies on the Chorus.
And, I like the sustain and step-down at the end of the song - the 3-part - on the word, "exist" - VERY nice falsetto & control....

5 out of 5 STARS!

I haven't checked out the song yet, but I promise I will.

I just want to point out that the local music scene about three or four hours away from you, LD, is just as bad. I've been trying to put together a legitimate rock project for a year now but everyone I encounter wants to play nothing but death metal. Not a single person wants to do straight-up rock, let alone melodic/progressive-influenced rock. I don't get what the obsession with these metal bands is, they all sound exactly the same too!

Once I shore up some bank and get better on the bass I'm hauling ass out of this backwater town and looking for some people who really wanna groove. It's hard finding musical compatability out there when your top influences are Rush, Toto, Journey, and Van Halen instead of Black Dahlia Murder, Job for a Cowboy, Nile, and Deicide.

WOW!! LD, yeah, I would definitely buy your album.

That was a very solid track, and the fact that you played everything makes it all sweeter.

Catchy groove, good rhythm, and a VERY tasty guitar solo.. I loved the interlude about 3/4ths of the way through the song as the solo was winding down. Nice touch!

Thanks a lot for the compliment everyone. I am so unsure about my own writing that I need to here unbiased opinions to see if I am on the right track. Thing is I have songs that sound like that and then other stuff that sounds like Simon and Garfunkle. I want to write one set of songs that sound like they belong together and that has been a problem.. Too many damn influences I guess.

No. You writing style is obvisouly loads of different styles so dont be forcing yourself to write one style of music, just write a set of songs that come naturally to you

Plenty of artists have pulled off having a variety of styles and songs on their albums without sounding disjointed or directionless. It's all about the order and flow.. you could have heavy metal and acoustic folk on the same album if segeueueueueueued the right way.

Variety is a good thing!
We all have different moods and like to listen to different style songs according to what we feel like at that moment. You can combine your variety of stuff so they flow together. It's like putting together a set list when you do a live show. Put them in order, see how they flow and move 'em around until it fits.

You are very talented LD.
The song is great, you play great and you sing great.
Don't give up. 8)

Man, if you ever wanted to throw a cover tune into the mix, do a rocking version of "The Boxer" (my favorite S&G tune). That would kick! Have some slowly simmering and building rock guitar in the background... something that sounds distant, yet powerful.

Bit of a harder edge that isn't always to my liking but
you made it interesting and energetic.
Good work.

Can't tell if the song wants to be hard rock, punk rock or melodic rock. Vocal delivery is a little nasal for my tastes, could use some doubling on the bridge into the chorus. However, good musicianship, would like to hear something more catchy. ;)

That's actually a good thing. Always a +1 in my book if a song either defies categorization or straddles some lines.

That's not what I meant. The song has too many styles in one go. Should be consistant in overall theme in my opinion. Sometimes less is more. ;)

That part in the middle before the solo was inspired by Lay it on the Line from Triumph and a little of The Police hence the feel right there. After that the solo is the hardest sounding part of the song. far as the vocal delivery goes.. It could go in a million different directions. If anyone wants to take a stab at it I will be happy to send a version with no vocals however I think that the 3 part harmony that streches over the chord change back in to the verse needs to stay. Other than that its still a pretty blank canvas far as I am concerned..... Thats the thing about my writing. A song can start out sounding country and turn to Metal before its over hehe... Not that abrupt..Hehe.. In this piece I hear Modern, Classic, Melodic and hard rock all rolled in to one song. My influences stick out a lot and really it didnt come out like it sounded in my head but again it never does....

"In this piece I hear Modern, Classic, Melodic and hard rock all rolled in to one song."

Exactly, each passage could almost be another song on it's own. ;) Hence my original post. I listened to it agian on my proper sound system, good musicianship and the vocals sounded more fuller. Nice job!

I have a few other things that i might post up because I really value your opinions. They are very, very crude and were recorded when I 1st started learning to record. Some are instrumental and some are like a couple of minutes. Sadly, the best song I think I have ever written was lost in a hard drive crash and I cant remember the chorus !

Sounds good. It reminds me a lot of Phil Vincent esp. vocalwise and guitarwise. Not a bad example! The only thing I don't like is that you layered all backings by yourself. I don't always like that with Phil either, although on some songs it works well. I would keep the lead voc, do one melody yourself and have 1 or 2 other singers do the other harmonies. This recording does not sound el cheapo, really. Also have someone else do the bass (I can get you in touch with some players if you want).

Overall, very promising!
