That's a term I hear frequently around here. I at least know that it refers to the 'expected' hits that will be heard at EVERY concert. I'm wondering, does this board have 12 songs that everyone agrees on, or is it more of a broader term used to describe the played out songs that most would like to see changed up a bit. The "Dirty Dozen" as best I can figure include:

Don't Stop Believin'
Open Arms
Seperate Ways
Faithfully
Be Good To Yourself
Wheel in the Sky
Any Way You Want it
Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'
Lights

That makes nine that I have no doubt about. But there are several candidates (In my opinion) that could fill out the other 3, among them:

Stone in Love
Escape
Still They Ride
Ask the Lonely
Just the Same Way
Who's Cryin' Now

So what are they?

"Ask the Lonely" and "Who's Crying Now" are definitely two of them and also "Send Her My Love".

I think the remaining 3 float between these 4:

Stone in Love
Escape
Ask the Lonely
Send her my Love

They probably change out one of those from show to show. My guess is they've been floating Send her my Love in and out of the list.

The Dirty Dozen are ones that have never and probably will never be dropped from any set list, so that discounts Ask The Lonely, Be Good To Yourself, Send her My love

I don't know that "dirty dozen" is supposed to be literal. There's roughly a dozen that alwyas get played... I'd say it's about 10 guanatees, but "dirty 10" has no ring to it and sounds more like something out of a porn flick. LOL!

I think it really all depends on who you ask. Already there are varying opinions. Hell, could even be a baker's dozen by the time we get done arguing about it... lol!! BGTY probably doesn't belong, I don't think...

Stone In Love absolutely belongs. It's never been dropped from the setlist.

I know they play ESCAPE alot, but that was never a radio hit, and thus I don't think it belongs in that list.

I would say that if you had to narrow down the "Dirty Dozen" to exactly 12 songs, (Which I don't think Journey means it literally to be exactly 12) they would be (in no particular order)

1. Don't Stop Believin
2. Faithfully
3 Open Arms
4. Any Way You Want It
5. Stone In Love
6. Separate Ways
7. Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'
8. Wheel In The Sky
9. Lights
10. Any Way You Want It
11. Who's Cryin' Now
12. Probably a toss up between Send Her My Love and Ask The Lonely (I think Send Her My Love is the only song on the list they've ever not played in a concert, that I know of)


I would personally add in both Mother/Father (Although I think Schon is smart enough to understand that only Perry can pull that one off) and Patiently, as I think they're both signature Journey tracks!

Agreed 100%! BGTY is the ultimate CHEESY song and it sucks as much as Open Arms, to me! Even though it charted higher than many other Journey tracks (it actually got to number 9 on the Billboard charts), the song just doesn't work for me and never has! Stone in Love is a SUPERB track! I never understood why that song wasn't the hit that some other Journey hits were! Just a great freakin' tune!

ahh i love BGTY it would definite be in my ultimate list, however its certainly not one of the dirty dozen, wish it was though./

The DD is just like having a triple bill. It's all an excuse for not playing new music live.

I'll never kill Journey for not playing new music. I can't think of ANY bands from Journey's era, who are still performing, who don't do the same exact thing. The reality is that more than 90% of all people attending a concert with the name "Journey" attached to it, are there for one reason and one reason only...to hear the songs from an era gone by. The only people who really care about new music are people who visit websites like this, and that probably represents less than 1% of people who show up at their concerts. Most people showing up at these concerts still think Perry is on the stage and that 1983 is frozen in time.

They do play Escape a lot, but not because it was a radio hit. It's one of those songs that reinvigorates the audience after hit fatigue sets in. When they play some songs that are mid tempo to slow back to back, (Lights, Send her My love, Open Arms, Who's Cryin' Now, etc.), Escape is a breath of fresh air. An influx of needed adrenaline. It's a real put your hands together kind of song. I really dig it.

I also wouldn't discount BGTYS. Vast majority of the audiences get into that one. We are talking about casual fans, after all.

Well, I can't speak for other Journey fans, but my reason isn't any more complicated than what I stated. The song simply reaks of cheesy, bubble gum pop, that a "boy band" sounds like it should be singing. The song just never worked for me. Open Arms is the highest charting song of Journey's entire career, and I think it may be one of the worst songs they ever put out! I've heard people criticize "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever", and I think it's a brilliant performance by Perry. Different strokes for different folks!

Jeremey nailed that song, 100% as well as Perry. No joke. He even does the ultra-high melody vocal at the very end (I know some people thought that was a distorted guitar until I told them it was actually Steve) to perfection.

But I'm sure Arnel is just as good.

Well Arnel is about to sing live in Vegas for Journey and Jeremey is singing a club in Cleveland. You do the math.

I have only heard Jeremey be truly awful on one song and it was Mother Father. Could've been an off night or whatever, but he took a LOT of shit for it on this board so I'm not the only person that heard it. Please post this version that he "nailed." I'm calling bullshit.

And Jimi Jamison is struggling as a night club owner to pay off massive credit card debts while Robin McAuley (purportedly) tours with Survivor.

The best or most talented guy doesn't always get the gig. That was absolutely the case here. Jeremey is also a fantastic songwriter, and a loving husband and gentleman to boot. Not that Arnel isn't a good guy...don't know him...but talent had nothing to do with Arnel getting the gig.

Yes it did. Jeremey was passed over. Arnel is a much better singer, period. Don't believe what you read in a blog.

I find it hard to believe that 90% of the people at concerts come to hear only hits. Come on, let's do the math.

There have been 65 million units moved, and only what, 11 million of those were the Greatest Hits? That means 50+ million have been sold from the rest of the catalogue. Not every person with a Journey record or CD, only listens to the chart-topping singles from the albums. My mom's all about the hit singles, and even she wants to hear stuff like "Winds of March" and "Daydream."

I'm sure it's gotta be in the back of the minds of a lot of Journey fans at the shows. "I wonder if they'll bust out 'Walks Like A Lady' or 'Edge of the Blade'?" "Man, that 'Lady Luck' song ripped, i wonder if they ever play it in concert?"

First off, they haven't moved 65 million. That number is made up. Here in the US, they are somewhere near 41 million. Having said that, the first three Perry albums, Infinity, Evolution, and Departure, have sold, 3 million, 3 million and 3 million, producing 4 of the dirty dozen songs. The rest of the CD's 31 million including the GH, have CD's that contain hit after hit.

Prog, the Dirty Dozen are responsible for at least 32 million (roughly 80%) of Journey's moved units. I agree that 90% of the fans want the hits....and it doesn't matter what they want, that's what they're going to get.

The "Dirty Dozen" are the 12 dudes that are going to get pictures with their cranks in Dan's face after he passes out in Vegas.
