Journey in Sports Illustrated?

Oh geeze.

My son IMs me and tells me that he has "found" someone via the Sports Illustrated website that sounds more like Perry than Perry.

Now mind you, this guy has grown up with Steve Perry music day in and day out.

He knows I "blab about that Soto dude", but has no idea about the Journey issue.

I say "prove it"!

He sends me the link of.................................Arnel Pineda singing "Faithfully" with the Zoo.

His exact words were "this guy rocks" and "the band really sucks".

I nearly faint. I asked him if he had any idea that Journey had actually hired this guy already.

Nope. None. Nada.

So, Arnel's already impressed one very casual Journey fan, and one who heard nothin' but Perry since he was one year old.

What's a mother to do?

Thats funny, how it's getting around. I just had something similar happen. My son who lives in Italy called me last week. Needless to say when he calls, or I call him, I don't spend the time talking about Journey, believe or not, ha!.and haven't mentioned anything to him about a new singer.... but he brought it up. He said he had been looking in youtube and came across Pineda. He said "You didn't tell me Journey had a new singer, I just found out on the internet" .... he said, "Man, that guy can sing his ass off!" ...and he said that he was "the closest to Steve Perry I've ever heard"....guess he had the same reaction as Neal did on first listen. My son has also heard Journey his whole life and is a fan of the music and Perry's voice. He also went with me to 4 concerts last tour and really digs, Soto and thought he did a great job...although he likes his solo and Talisman stuff more then singing with Journey. Anyway, he was blown away by Pineda and is looking forward to hearing him with the band.

It always amazes me how often I hear people say things like "close your eyes and it's Steve Perry". I don't think Arnel sounds anything like Perry. At all. He sounds like Arnel. A guy with a good voice who can sing Perry's songs.

This is a good thing.

I hate when a band tries to replace a singer with a soundalike. It diminishes their accomplishments.

Well there's the next generation of fans, right there (my son is 24). Maybe, just maybe they can pull this off? I'll eat my non-existent hat (or buy a round if I ever see them live).

My son is 24 also. Seems the younger generation doesn't have as much of a problem with singer changes and can just appreciate each for their abilities. It's the diehard fans, the ones who have their favorites, and those that have seen and heard too much behind the curtain..the older fans, who have such a problem accepting change. The younger and more casual only go with the music and if they like what they hear or not.

Whether I live another year or until 100, I would die a happy man if Steve and Neal got together just ONE more time.

I think everyone would like to hear that just one more time, even my son. I would just like to hear Perry sing again at least once more,..not just background vocals.. with or without Neal. 8)

...and none of us have any guarentees, Daniel. Anyone of us could be gone in an instant...we don't know so we all should live like we are dying and embrace each and everyday...don't live with regrets and do what we dream to do if we can. I'm sure that you have a long way to go yet, so you never know...sometimes wishes do come true ...there's always a chance it could happen and you'll see it. Never say never. :)

That's not the updated one with better vocals is it?

Very surprised that SI put that up there. Slow news day.
