There is a singer named Lennon Murphy (birth name, not changed).

Yoko is suing her for using John Lennon's name. :shock:

Yoko Ono, the widow of slain Beatles star John Lennon, is filling a lawsuit against singer/songwriter Lennon Murphy for using the name "Lennon" as the name of her band.

An attorney for Ono filed a petition last week with the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office seeking to cancel a trademark Murphy took out in 2003 for "Lennon" as the name of her band.

Lennon is a very common name in Ireland.

Murphy, whose birth name is Lennon, said she spoke to Ono and her attorney in 2000 when she first signed to Arista Records.

According to Murphy, the label was concerned about the name issue and sent her product manager, Justin Shukat (reportedly the son of Ono attorney Peter Shukat), to approach Lennon's widow. Ono supposedly gave her approval, clearing the way for the Tennessee-born Murphy and her eponymous band to release their album, 5:30 Saturday Morning.

According to Murphy, Ono's change of heart came two days before the statute of limitations was due to run out.

Murphy has expressed her distress with the situation on her blog on MySpace and on her website, http://www.lennononline.com.

Murphy has one key person in her corner.

Julian Lennon, John's son from his marriage to first wife Cynthia Lennon, himself a singer-songwriter who has had his own run-ins with his stepmom, posted Murphy's message on his MySpace blog and expressed sympathy for her situation.

"This is NOT about me but about a girl named 'Lennon,' " writes Julian, 44. "She has my full support."

I heard about this on "E" I thought it was so far fetched and ridicuous that it would never come to fruition...just thought it was a way of getting her name (Yoko's) back in the media.

I read about this the other day. Ono was a prickly bitch when she was young and she certainly hasn't mellowed with age. She's like the Leona Helmsley of classic rock.

Humph - you would think that of all people, Yoko Ono, as an artist, would be supportive of another artist.

John did not have a solo hold on the name "Lennon". I can understand Yoko wanting to defend the legacy but I think most folks can tell the difference between John Lennon and a band named "Lennon".

Let's see, John would be 68 this year and I believe Yoko is 8 years older - hope she isn't going senile at 75.....

Hard to believe she could even find an attorney to file that law suit. I guess some people will do anything for money, including filing a ridiculous lawsuit like that. Lennon Murphy should file a counter suit against her for parading around as a human being.

Maybe the publicity the case gets will do the young woman some good. Raise her profile and gain her some fans who may otherwise not have heard of her?

I should think that if her Birth Certificate confirms her name to be Lennon, there is nothing Ono can do - except pay the girl some damages for attempting to defame her.

ROFL!!! Now that would be hilarious.

Admittedly I hadn't heard of this girl until I heard her being interviewed on the radio about this, but they played a few clips of 2 or 3 of her songs and I thought she was pretty good. And I certainly don't feel it's fair that she be sued for using her OWN name. Good lord. :roll:

That would be like Jeff Beck suing Beck. It's the person's NAME, for fuck's sake.

But I guess Yoko Psycho ran out of people to fight with over John.

She uses John's EVERYTHING to cash in. She's always fighting with someone over something with regard to John's music, image, name, everything. She won't even let this young girl alone to use her own birth name, and this poor girl wasn't even born when Lennon was around! Yet here she is being forced into a legal battle with Psycho Ono.
