Its on every channel here... news conference to come in about a half an hour... 5:30-ish CST.

At least 15 people have been transported to hospitals but the extent of the injuries are unknown.
The shooter is assumed dead (says NBC news) but it's not known yet if he killed himself or if police did.

The reports from inside Cole Hall are that there were at least 200 people inside at the time and the guy came in, said nothing, and just opened fire.

Jesus.

At least 5 dead now. I lived not too far from there before I moved. My heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones.

Happy Valentine's Day indeed

True, i had an uneducated response it would seem. I just mean that firemans should not be so easy to get a hold of as they appear to be.

This has nothing to do with gun control. Guns are available on the black market and no law restricting them is going to make them unavailable to criminals.

That may be the case, but i cant even think of one example of a big gun crime in a school in Britain over the last 10 years..

Criminals can get them of course. But a pissed off student who wants to cause chaos because the world is against them..normally just has to get on with life because getting hold of a gun is a bit far fetched..were as in America..

I know in the state of IL you have to have a Firearm Owner ID (FOID) card to be able to buy ammunition or own a gun. One of the questions on the application is if you've had a history of mental illness or have been hospitalized because of it. If you answered yes you are automaticlly denied until you can be proven that you're stable and after a certain number of years if you were hospitalized.

And of course there is no enforcement of laws that aren't friendly to the gun lobby.

IL is pretty strict on gun laws, but like someone else said the criminals WILL find a way to get their hands on a weapon

BUt what about small gun shops, run by a little old man? does he really have the time, patience and money to run back checks on everyone? It just seems way to easy to me to get yourself a gun. Whether it be from a friend, store, family member. Laws need to be enforced to make it harder for people to get them. Obvisouly it wont eradicate it completly but it will damn sure bring a drop in statistics..i guess the government make too much money from it

This from the IL State Police website.... http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/firearmsfaq.cfm

Does Illinois have a waiting period for firearm purchases and does it apply to private sales?
Yes. Illinois law requires withholding the delivery of a concealable weapon (i.e. a handgun) for at least 72 hours and a rifle, shotgun, or other long gun for at least 24 hours. This applies for gun dealers and private sales.

The HELL it doesn't.

All you fucking NRA supporters and GOP voters should be proud. However, you assholes won't sign on a Democratic nill that helps prohibit this kind of shit, because you(GOP), collects money from the NRA, so they can make machine guns legal. Nice

Gun control makes it's more difficult to posses firearms, fact.

Here comes Lie Finder with his smack.

Huh? There are gun laws in place, and automatic weapons (I.E. Machine guns) are still illegal as far as I know. Criminals will find ways of getting their hands on weapons, even with the strictest of laws.

Maybe they will, but there is a hell of alot more chance that a more of them WONT get there hand on firearms if there are laws in place to NOT ALLOW firearms

The day the national news media stops releasing these psychopath's names on the national news will be the day these freaks stop perpetrating these five-minutes-of-fame acts of mass murder. They just want to go out with a bang. As long as CNN, FOX, and MSNBC provide that bang, it will keep happening.

This is so incredibly sad. A lot of kids from my area go to NIU. Fortunately I don't know anyone going there now. Argue about gun control all you want, but someone who is crazy will find a way to make it happen no matter what the laws are. The shooter apparently wasn't even a student there anymore.

Maybe, but its worth noting that theres alot of violence in England these days, where gun control exists. The the suburbs of London, South Manchester, Nottingham have seen all sorts of increses in gun crime, and there's been several high profile shootings on the news. Not to menton the horrific increase in knife crime.

I called one of my aunts this morning because we have some family that lives in Illinois that go to school. I got a call back saying that
my 2 cousins go to school there. One of them was out sick and the other was on his way to school when this happened. We got lucky..
this hit a little too close to home. :( :(

It's sad that this is becoming too common.

Very sad... Saw today that he had apparently "quit taking his medication". There is a reason truly sick people need their medication, and this proves it.
