Chile - Open Arms & OTY - good quality

Saint John found and posted this clip first. Good close-ups. Open Arms starts at 2:20, Only The Young at 5:40

I'm sure Perry's mouth is dropping about now. "Damn, they REALLY replaced me this time."

Thats the only song that I have heard that I have liked. That is my favorite Journey song, and it sounded great, everthing else sucked, but, that kicked ass.

Good stuff - thanks! But I don't think Perry's jaw will drop. He made his legacy, and it is continuing on - not being stolen away. Let the Perry-bashers have their fun and say that people will forget him once they hear Arnel... all the while they sing the songs he made famous - LOL!

Rock on Journey!

Hey Stevo, how's it hangin?!

Which of those did you like, OA or OTY? No doubt he won't replace Perry's contribution but its good to hear these notes gettin hit with some force. Deen's ok but I'm glad he's off the vox now.

His renditions of Faithfully and DSB are also more than adequate.
Just waiting for someone on YouTube to put up AWYWI.

When they're playing 5-6 shows a week again on tour, I imagine Deen will be back singing one or two songs. Maybe not this summer since they'll probably do a shorter set (like this one) if playing with 2 other bands, but eventually when it's just Journey having to do 2+ hours, Deen will be back.

Fuck that piece by piece stuff... the concert is streaming all the way right now...No need for parts, you just have to know where to look :)

Can't talk any more...I'm headlong into Ask The Lonely and I want to listen without glitches and pauses and buffering. 8)

"Only The Young" sounded good on this clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laMXGoCgp1c

By video #7 Arnel was sounding rough though. He dropped an octave to finish "Don't Stop Believing":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18t8i4YvAq0

I just hope his voice doesn't go the way of Steve Augeri after a year. Journey is rough on singers. I guess I should say trying to walk in Steve Perry's shoes is rough on singers.

:(

The best part is what Jon did with the OA instrumental intro....
I've played with it too...
but that was outstanding...

Vocals sunded good
Well received
Neal looks happy...

I'm happy for
.;...Arnel...almost fogot his name
Still he's not Steve
A bit more pure in voice
Did an commendable job

I don't like how it seems he has been instructed to copy Steve's stage movements.
Guess that's all part of the act
Still, it has that out of sync Godzilla feel

Despite his octave drop, he was ready for more. Now THAT's brave. :P

Though Jon hasn't been on my love list for awhile, I agree with you Shadowsong.
That was a nice little intro wasn't it.
Far as Mr Pineda goes.....the thing I enjoy most of him is his innocent excitement.
I'll still be keeping my cash for others I enjoy but I do wish him well in his future with this band.

Thanks for the links folks!

Gotta admit, I am pleasantly impressed.
Not only did Arnel sound pretty darned good
but he has a "likeable" quality to him watching
him running around up there. You just want to root for him to
do good, know what I mean? Kinda like "Rudy" :)

But seriously, sounded better than I ever expected and seems
to feel very comfortable in front of that crowd...

But Jon didn't look like he was having fun and is looking
more and more like Dan Ackroyd every year!

Does Jon ever look like he's having fun? I think they all put a lot of hard work into the culmination of last night and it's huge relief to have it out of the way. Patience, time, and continual improvement will be the band's ally. But we as fans have to be patient, too. The band has a singer adapting to a different continent, a different culture, a different catalog, a different language and a different audience. Anyone that judges him on one performance has a brain the size of a flea's dick.

LOL! Atleast Dan Ackroyd has a sense of humor.. **que Ghostbusters
theme music**

Your right.. I thought AP warmed up to the crowd pretty well.

Thankyou SO Much for posting these.
Very interesting.

Only The Young was really quite good IMO!
I like deep, strong and rich voices - his seems a bit thin and reedy in parts but I'm being too picky. He must have been apprehensive! He did great.
He'll be fine. He looks the part. He has a really pleasant demeanor and looks so bloody happy to have got the gig. His enthusiasm is great. And he seems like a happy person. I like happy.

I just hope the band don't screw him over or wreck his voice.

Good luck to him.

Well to tell you the truth, I am sitting here a little shocked. MUCH better than I expected. Give him some time on the road, and we shall see. Ya got to give the guy some credit.

Definitely. He seems to have loosened up a little now that he has a bigger stage to work with too. Nice harmonies on OTY.

Great job Arnel! 8)

Well, the little guy proved it: he's got the goods, and he can kick ass. I think he'll be fine.

Now we just wait for the new album to see if the songs are any good...

;^)

what I'm hearing so far sounds really good. He's putting some of his own feel into some of the songs (open arms) and he's a great front guy (better than Augeri was- he engages the crowd much more), you can tell he's having a good time. OTY sounds BRILLIANT. His voice cuts through more than Augeri's did and fits the band's legacy sound so much better than Jeff's. His voice is a GREAT fit for the band. I can't help but notice that the rest of the band (including Castronovo's vocals) are way under Arnels. So there's no "Deen's helping him out" stuff here.
So he changed ONE of the notes in DSB. Singers do that all the time. At least he didn't put a weak falsetto spin on it or have the drummer sing. Every other note was great. The guy's probably a bit amped and a bit out of breath, not to mention the Chile heat.

At this point, I'm VERY glad that Journey made the decision they made. Listen to that high note at the end of OTY and also during the chorus in Lights. Perry NEVER did those notes. Awesome! There are a few pitch problems in some of the earlier tracks, but it could've been a monitor mix thing and it's nothing like the pitch problems that Augeri had throughout his tenure with Journey (and I'm a huge SA fan). Wheel in the Sky hasn't sounded this good since Infinity was released. Not sure why he's not singing on the harmony though, almost like he forgot, but he adds it later in the tune. Regarding pitch, Cain and Schon's guitar's are not in tune with each other. Listen to the stuff Arnel does at the end of Wheel- holy crap, it's 1979! ;)

I think that Arnel will do great. Gotta wonder what Schon's thinking, he's gotta be wetting his pants.

If this concert was from the Augeri or JSS era, everyone would be saying how great it was. I read many comments regarding some of those shows that were so off the mark, saying how great they were when it was apparent the band was struggling, sloppy, and vocally baked. THIS show, the band sounds tighter than the last times we heard them and the vocals are killer and I feel that they'll only get better than this. Better than THIS? Holy Crap! Bring it on!!!

I'm actually excited about Journey again and would buy a ticket to see this show.

Nice to see....

That the band didn't need to bury the vocals behind the music. Too often Steve A's vocals were lost in the mix.
Definitely some rough spots, but Arnel has got the goods. It will be interesting to watch him grow into the band -- if he's given a chance!

One other thing, Schon finally can feel like a giant (as long as he wears his boots)!

Oh, yet another: John has always looked like an awkward performer to me, when he tries to rock. Very stiff when plays guitar. Not sure how much he enjoys that role.

Overall, really enjoyed the show. Still hate what they did to JSS, whom I also think would have helped the band move into a great direction.

He dropped ONE note. ONE and he didn't drop it an octave, btw. It's like a third, which decent singers can do. Perry did it later on. Augeri, who I like (I always defend him, sorry) didn't do that very well. Can't believe people are bitching about ONE note. Did anybody hear the MANY notes he sang that Augeri, JSS, and !GASP! Even PERRY NEVER sang live? He sings some REALLY high notes during this show, mostly when he's improving at the end of tunes. Listen to the end of OTY, Wheel, Separate Ways. There are notes there that I've never heard live with Journey EVER. Not to take anything away from the other singers, cuz I like them all, but THIS guy has some amazing chops going.

It's nice to hear ORGAN in Any Way You Want it instead of the crappy synth Cain's used forever. I've always hated that.

Even Steve Perry doesn't fit his old shoes anymore! But I'd rather "see" him in old grungy flipflops than anyone else in designer shoes! :D :D :D
