Timing Problems?

PostPosted: Mon Mar 10, 2008 9:13 am

I've listened to quite a few YouTube videos of the Chile and Las Vegas Journey shows, and I seem to notice quite a few timing issues on them. It seems that Arnel is coming in a beat or two ahead of where he should be singing on numerous songs. In several instances you could hear the band compensate for him by cutting off part of a measure to avoid crashing the song completely. They are obviously all pros and did a great job at this - so much that many people probably never even noticed the timing issues.

I realize that Arnel is probably unfamiliar with a lot of the classic Journey songs that most of us know by heart. Hopefully he will be able to get to know the songs better and correct the timing problems. However, he has been singing Faithfully for years with The Zoo Band, and he had a timing issue with it on the Vegas boot. I can't help but wonder if he has enough of the other instruments coming through in his in-ear monitors? If not, they need to correct that problem. I realize that they can overdub studio vocals onto the live DVD, but it's going to take some editing to fix the timing issues. This is probably why they re-played several of the songs at the end of the Las Vegas show for the live DVD.

He removed his in ear monitors a few songs in at the first Chile concert and seemed to get better thereafter. Both Cain and Schon seemed to be experiencing technical issues as well. That being said he was very, very early during part of Only the Young.

I originally thought there were some timing issues when the Chile show was first streamed, but I wondered if also the poor stream was causing it. I did find a few timing errors while watching the Chile DVD today. Nothing too bad... I caught a few glitches in Vegas, too, but I just don't expect these guys to be 100% perfect all the time, and these were his first few shows. Personally, I do try to keep in mind that bands always sound so much better in a live environment than on tape, where every little mistake is caught. I think Arnel's in it for the long haul...

The question I have to ask is why record a DVD so soon. Wouldn't you want to let Arnel get the diction under control and know the songs by heart and record them when he can do it in his sleep? I'm thinking they said "Let's get this recorded before we kill his voice". They do have some experience with that, you know.

They are obviously very confident and excited about this new chapter and might be looking to capture some of this excitement and energy for the DVD. Lightning in a bottle so to speak.

I get where you're coming from, but a less than stellar performance would negate some of that new found energy, don't you think? I realize they can fix a lot in production but I hope it's not too obvious.

I agree with both of those factors. I would probably speculate that offers were on the table that needed to be jumped on.

My guess is to make the June package more attractive to buyers -- a 2-disc set, with a bonus DVD from what I gather. I asked a few others if I'd understood this correctly, and it was what they seemed to have interpreted from the news, too.

Yeah, if an eight-figure offer from Wal-Mart was on the table for a DVD/CD package, it's safe to say that I myself would jump on it immediately in that position. Don't want to squander any lucrative opportunities, and come on, Journey's always been a very "business" oriented band, they know where to go for the dough.

Luckily then the Vegas shows have been very well received. All being well the proposed DVD should rock!

OK. So I guess it's market forces at work then! Wonder how much pressure Arnel feels with all of this happening so fast. He has improved immensly in just 3 or 4 shows. I can't help but thnk they will have a real MAGIC performance some night and wish they could have recorded and released that instead.

Aside from a very few gaffes, I think the crowd was feeling the magic on the 8th. Hey, who knows about the pressure, but it has to be immense! I'm definitely buying the new product when it comes out...

You've got to be kidding, right? Where are the sources to this supposed offer from WalMart? I personally don't believe that it is anything but a false rumor. WalMart is not in the business of risking capital on 80's bands that *might* sell a few more records. I would be shocked if this record sold more than 200,000 copies. If it reached that number - which is on the high end in my book - the band would only make around a dollar or two per album after all expenses were paid, which wouldn't even amount to a half million dollars (six figures) - well short of "eight figures" which would be in the tens of millions.

C'mon guys - Journey isn't going to put out any new gold or platinum records. Who are we trying to kid? The money is in touring, not in record sales.

P.S. - I'm not trying to be a downer, just trying to keep it real.

LOL... I dunno where the "eight" came from, I wasn't trying to pass that size of an offer off as being factual or anything. Sorry for the confusion, I'd guess that it's seven figures at the most, more than likely being in the hundreds of thousands range. Again, I have no clue why I put "eight" figures on there... :? I'm mathematically challenged, maybe that's why?

Actually, from what I've heard from others, Wal Mart doesn't have to invest much, because they are not a label for these guys -- they just offer a distribution method thru their stores. I believe all the manufacturing costs go back to the artists or their people. Starbucks is the same way -- it's a distribution deal. Someone correct me if they understand it differently.

I actually just ran across Jon Cain mentioning it in the "Wildest Dreams" YouTube clip that was offered... said it will be a 2-disc set with the DVD included, offered exclusively at Wal Mart.

As has been mentioned, the Vegas shows have a mention of the cd-live dvd package. It's a lot earlier than I would have wanted for a live dvd, but there were one or two cancelled shows that were planned to happen. Too bad they couldn't play more shows, because they will be a much tighter band by the end of the summer. I guess they had to get the filming over in time for mixing/mastering/re-doing any issues that come up.

If you want my guess on the matter, Columbia knows that Journey is back in the public eye after the Soprano's thing, and they are willing to give the new singer a chance. Basically, the record company and management have the option to forget the last ten years happened, and start fresh. With all the buzz over American Idol and such, you can easily spin Arnel being found on youtube in a positive direction. It really has the underdog story that people love to root for.

No, it isn't Perry, but Journey IS being mentioned in the all-important teen market required for a hit record. Everything comes in circles, and it is becoming cool to like Journey. For what it's worth, I would guess this is the one last gasping-for-air big push before the inevitable fade into obscurity if the cd fails. Time will tell...

They say most things aren't as bad the second time around, so you should be fine

Seriously though, I have firsthand experience watching college students talking about--and singing--Don't Stop Believin' in the last few months, and they weren't making fun of it. Doesn't translate into record sales of a new album, but Journey's popularity got a great boost recently. Take it with a grain of salt, or a bottle if you prefer.

larry diets are nothing but lies. just cut out unhealthy food. add more produce to your meals. cut out bad fats & load up on the good ones. you can go low carb but your body needs carbs to function... especially your brain. cut out white food... rice, flour, bread, sugar, pototoes. the problem with going on a diet... like atkins is it's not a cure... once you're off you just gain the weight back. it's a lie. eat what you like & execise... do something fun like hike, bike, swim...

take vitamins & drink lots of water... half your body weight. }:C)

porkrinds??? EW!!!!! tuna fish is good for you... make a nice salad & add the tuna... squeeze some lemon instead of dressing... or red wine vinegar & olive oil. }:C)

You're amazing dude. I've never seen a teenager with such a kick ass taste in music like you have (except for maybe Phen). I think you were born like 20 years too late. Lucky for you though - enjoy your youth. It slips away before you know it.
