Gov. Eliot Spitzer apologized to his family and the public on Monday, but did not not elaborate on a bombshell report that he has been involved in a prostitution ring.

"I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family ... my sense of right and wrong," he said at a news conference at his Manhattan office. "I must now dedicate some time to rededicate my trust to my family. If my wife had only sucked my cock when I asked her... none of this would have ever happened."

Spitzer's wife stood at his side, her hands behind her back and her eyes cast downward, as he made the statement.

The New York Times reported that a person with knowledge of the governor's role believes the governor is identified as a client in court papers. Four people allegedly connected to a high-end prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP were arrested last week.

The Web site of the Emperors Club VIP displays photographs of scantily clad women with their faces hidden. It also shows hourly rates depending on whether the prostitutes were rated with one diamond, the lowest ranking, or seven diamonds, the highest. The most highly ranked prostitutes cost $5,500 an hour, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the defendants arranged connections between wealthy men and more than 50 prostitutes in New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Miami, London and Paris.

The Times reported that the governor's travel records show he was in Washington in mid-February, and that one of the clients arranged to meet with a prostitute on the night of Feb. 13.

The case is being handled by prosecutors in the Public Corruption unit of U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia's office. Garcia spokeswoman Yusill Scribner said the office had no comment.

Spitzer, 48, built his political legacy on rooting out corruption, including several headline-making battles with Wall Street while serving as attorney general. He stormed into the governor's office in 2006 with a historic share of the vote, vowing to continue his no-nonsense approach to fixing one of the nation's worst governments.

Time magazine had named him "Crusader of the Year" when he was attorney general and the tabloids proclaimed him "Eliot Ness."

But his stint as governor has been marred by several problems, including an unpopular plan to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants and a plot by his aides to smear Spitzer's main Republican nemesis.

Spitzer had been expected to testify to the state Public Integrity Commission he had created to answer for his role in the scandal, in which his aides were accused of misusing state police to compile travel records to embarrass Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno.

Spitzer had served two terms as attorney general where he pursued criminal and civil cases and cracked down on misconduct and conflicts of interests on Wall Street and in corporate America. He had previously been a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, handling organized crime and white-collar crime cases.

His cases as state attorney general included a few criminal prosecutions of prostitution rings and into tourism involving prostitutes.

In 2004, he was part of an investigation of an escort service in New York City that resulted in the arrest of 18 people on charges of promoting prostitution and related charges.

That is a completely assinine statement. Coloring everyone with a single brush stroke smacks of intolerance to the extreme. There are good republicans, good democrats, good independents and bad ones too.

Pull your head out of your ass for just a moment Dean and look at how ludicrious your words look.

Yeah, any Democrat that drives off a bridge leaving a young girl to drown, gets caught smoking crack, caught with hundreds of thousands in his freezer, commits lewd acts in the oval office, gets caught running gay prostitution out of his home, that is willing to "give" YOU "free" stuff is better than conservatives.  Yeah, we know.

Fuck you Stu. Anything IS better than a republican. Having said that, I of course meant to say had I known Spitzer did this I wouldn't vote for him, but NOT having knowledge of any mis-wrong doing, yes, I will pull the lever for a D anytime over an R. All the ideals and agendas the republicans stand for I despise.

Hillary Clinton Concedes to Obama, Runs Back to New York

New York (AP) - Hillary Clinton declares that she intends to fight for New York, her adopted home since winning her Senate seat. Said Clinton, "I'm a New Yorker, and I care about New Yorkers. I fully intend to seek the vacated office of Governor."

"It's a shame that Gov Spitzer got caught. But because he's been uncovered and is resigning, I feel it's my duty to relinquish the fight for President and go home where I'm needed.", the Senator was reported to say.

Subsequent calls to the Clinton for President campaign headquarters have gone unreturned.

No date has been set for a special Governor's election.

Wait a minute...Deano and I have personal disagreements on politics and few other things, but Dean is FAR from stupid. I have had some very interesting discussions with Dean away from MR and he speaks very intelligently and passionately about things he cares about. Don't mistake my yanking Deans chain for anything more than getting his goat about his political views.

Not all Democrats are stupid either.

I got on Dean for saying anything is better than a republican...so playing fair you are just as wrong making this statement.

You are just as wrong for ripping on Dean for having a double standard and then calling all Democrats stupid, you have the same double standard. It is just as much an asinine statement coming from you toward Democrats, as it is by Dean toward Republicans.

Look, it's DarwinNebraska!

In grade school he was probably the kid that always showed up to fights and arguments to stand in the back and yell "Kick his ass, man, yeah!" and "You tell 'em bro!"

Always instigating, always negative, always there.... but never a part of the issue at hand, never positive, and never intelligent in any way whatsoever.

....Jackass.

Ironic that Spitzer finds himself among the 'corrupt'....here's a guy that has (irrespective of his part affiliation) centered his entire career around stamping out corruption (albeit, he did tend to focus on republican corruption far more than anything else)...

...and here is among the corrupt.

I guess there's dirtbags on both sides of the aisle. It just goes to show that a good politician is hard to find.

This Spitzer guy is a real piece of work from what I've heard. He's apparently gone to great lengths to dig up as much dirt as possible on as many people as possible, through any means.

In his little speech tonight, he did exactly as I predicted, and exactly as I've tired from long ago -- went for the strong, confident method of speaking (what I call "speechifying"), claimed it was a "personal issue" (I haven't heard if any tax dollars might have been involved here?), stated that he would work hard to rebuild the public's trust, and basically distancing himself from responsibilty, made no offers to resign. And the cherry on top of the shite sundae -- he takes no questions. Carefully crafted, yet predictable, and absolutely insincere to the core.

For once, I'd like to see these weasels appear truly human, and showing some honest shame, humility, and real repentance. And a resignation should be made without question. Plus, instead of "standing by her man", it would be cool to see some of these wives say, "I can't talk right now, I'm so pissed off!" Here's what happens next, if you follow the playbook.

1) The public and his political adversaries will continue to put pressure on him to resign.

2) His advisers will tell him to amp up the remorse, and he may go on a tearful apology tour (with the wife holding his hand to show solidarity).

3) Eventually he'll be forced out.

So speaketh Rokkedamus...

Well, looks like he skipped straight to step 3 -- his enemies weren't about to let him get away so easily. Nostradokkus has spoken!

Another point of view on this matter.

"(CBS) The woes of New York's resigned Governor Eliot Spitzer have been much in the news this past week, and much on the mind of our contributor Ben Stein:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Like every other American, I was stunned by the fall of Elliot Spitzer. Of course I feel terrible for his family and for him. He fought the law and the law won.

But something sinister is happening here and it scares me.

Governor Spitzer was elected by an immense majority in the third most populous state. He got millions of votes. Now he's out of a job and in disgrace, and a man the voters did not vote for as governor is governor.

Why? Because some nosy civil servants at the IRS started a fishing expedition against Spitzer because they suspected he might be moving around money for political bribes.

So they wiretapped him and they found he was using the money he was moving around to buy the services of prostitutes.

Now, this is illegal in most states, and clearly it is in New York and in DC. But let's be honest: Men hire prostitutes by the thousands, maybe tens of thousands, every day They also bring women across state lines for sex every day.

The punishment for the men who hire hookers is usually nil, or at most a small fine close to what you'd get for a traffic ticket.

However, in Governor Spitzer's case, he got outed, humiliated, disgraced in front of his family, and then the voters lost the guy they voted for.

It is deeply scary to me that a few employees of the federal executive branch can start a train rolling that has such immense effects on the electoral process. Basically, a few career civil servants have nullified the will of the voters of the Empire State (over something clearly wrong, I don't doubt that, but it's not a political crime, not treason, not terrorism).

Having elected officials kicked out of office by appointed officials is a very dicey proposition. Over hiring prostitutes?

I strongly suspect that if the feds followed a hundred young male elected officials around for a year, they would find some sexual hanky panky among a lot of them, and some money or gifts changing hands often. If the feds prosecuted them all, it would basically mean that federal prosecutors have a veto over the electoral process.

That is dangerous.

More will be revealed but it all scares me. Elections are a lot more important than call girls."
