Arnel dude we get it, youve got a great set of pipes, but holding the notes longer than necessary
in the wrong places sounds.....karaokeish(is that a word?)...
reel in that big voice of yours and use some FINESSE. bring some contrast in your voice
and the strong higher parts will really stand out . I realize this is tougher to do on more upbeat songs
and easier on ballads, but its what seperates the pretenders from the pros. and youve got the potential dude!

I absolutely LOVED Mother/Father. Somehow we never managed to hear Deen do that one at the several concerts we attended in the last year or so. BEAUTIFUL!!! That is such an emotional song anyway.

I think that's actually their ONLY song that I like. It's a fun song for a keyboardist to play. The rest of their songs don't do anything for me.

Yes it was. Deen was the second star of the night, his vocals and drumming were both outstanding.

Yes it was. Deen was the second star of the night, his vocals and drumming were both outstanding.

Oh yeah! His drumming was awesome!! The best I've seen from him. Loved his drum solo, and when they put the camera on him for one of those last songs. Do you remember what that was? He was drumming away and we were in awe

Does anyone have any clips of Deen's Vegas performance on "Mother, Father"? Perry is still the only guy I've ever heard really pull that one off! I suspect it's probably the most difficult song to perform in the Journey catalog. I would think Arnel would actually have the power to potentially pull this one off. I guess Neal doesn't trust anyone but Deen to even attempt it.

I do know where you are coming from, though, because I've felt the same way. Sometimes it does seem to me like people are trying to "out-Perry" Perry, but I've slacked off on that. I'd rather hear people put themselves into a song, and if they want to hold a note out longer, who knows? You know, there are some of Perry's notes that just really grab ya, and maybe they just don't want to let them go so quickly, like a tight hug.

I actually agree.. The singing your way only does the song justice as long as you don't f with it.. I'm curious to hear Arnel sing the songs they were written..I would so love to hear him sing Faith in the Heartland..That way you can get a feeling of how Perry would sound on it also..Hell,rerecord Arrival with Arnel..

I think part of it is that he has spent so many years with a band that was not very good.
He couldnt just fit in, he had to do it all because hes all there was . I think he will just keep getting better
as time goes on.

I will agree with the thought only because we have seen on not one, but TWO occasions what this catalog can do to one's voice... I had the opportunity just last week, to try and do a scaled back, slowed down acoustic version of "Only the Young" and after one or two takes, my voice was shaky....I'd HATE to see what could happen day in and day out....

That's cause it's tailored to Perry's voice not yours.. You have to be up there already like Arnel..

Yes,that part..

My thought about alot of the way he sings the classics is that he's trying to make them his own and not always sound like Perry.

and yea, Deen nails it. Not a complete version but pretty good. Got to hear it live around 2003 when they first pulled it out, and the audience was blown away. Augeri also did considerbly better on that than one would have expected, and I would love to hear Arnel give it a go also. Not exactly the easiest song to sing.

What I heard is Deen still likes to sing the ballards, so they are keeping Mother Father in for Deen.
