You're not kidding! I've been living here since '93 and I've never seen so much racism in my entire life! Now, I do live in the capital city which is a long ways from that rednecks town, but it's really bad here!

I think the blacks here are more racist than the whites...and they get away with it! They have an all-black newspaper here that is only given to blacks. If a white person asks for one they won't give you one. We have an all black phone book (no, I'm not even joking) that has nothing but blacks and black businesses. I could go on about this shit for days, and some of you probably think I'm joking or exagerating...I'm not!

I stopped at a convenience store a few years ago (In a rough part of town just outside of Columbia). I got out of my truck, walk to the entrance and hear "You white Mutha Fucka!!!". I looked around, thinking surely he must be talking to someone else (I'm not exactly a little dude) and sure enough...There was an old black guy in his 60's sitting on a bench right in front of the store and he was looking right at me!   Because he was so old, I just walked right by him and ignored him. I got in the store and the owner yells "Leroy! I told you to SHUT THE FUCK UP or I'm kickin' your ass outta here!!!"   He asked me to ignore Leroy, and pay him no attention, said "he does that shit all the time". As I was getting in my truck to leave I hear "You WHITE MUTHA FUCKA!!!"

I couldn't do anything but laugh my ass off, but it just shows you an example of what I'm living with here in SC.

Racism works both ways I guess.

I was passing some time waiting for something or other in a strip mall and wandered into an African Goods/Foods store. Saw a lot of stuff I didn't know about so was checking it out. I'm white and I guess it was obvious I had no intention of buying anything.

After about 10 minutes, the owner asked me to leave (even after I tried to buy a soda which he refused to sell to me).

Fuck the South. They lost the war, get over it. I have met very good friends that live in Florida, SC, LA and Arkansas, so you people close your ears for a minute.

I wish the entire South would fall into the Atlantic and drift off somewhere or try to secede from the nation. Florida embarrasses us daily it seems.

Well, no disrespect whatsoever to you or your state, I just can't imagine people being so cruel or racist. It's obvious you don't support that either :D

"MY" state is MICHIGAN!!!! LA. is my adopted state, it never ceases to amaze me the way this state (La) is portrayed in the media~It is humiliating!!! That aside, I have met some of the most AMAZING people, eaten some of the BEST food and educated my children in the WORST educational system in the country. Somehow they made it through it all as intelligent, non-racist, girls....just like their mother!!!

Nothing is all bad, anywhere! That said, I can sadly tell you, from firsthand experience, that the South is VERY different, in terms of its attitude toward racism and religion! I've also met some VERY nice people, while living here. Unfortunately, I've also come across people who I wondered what planet they were actually raised on. As far as Florida goes, I don't know that even Floridians consider Florida to be "The South". I realize that it's as south as south gets, geographically speaking, but I don't believe it's really the southern culture that you see in "The Bible Belt" states.

The state of Florida consists of many retired "transplants". Not reflective of "Deep South". Many "Snow-Birds" have a second home in Florida that the locals snub.

Back when I sold my soul to the Corporate Devil and worked in health care administration, we had a diminutive little receptionist from Alabama. She was perhaps 4'10"...not that it matters.

Anyway, there is apparently a "Southern Pride" holiday in May (typically celebrated only by white Baptist-Americans). So, "Bertha" (sic) decides to bring in a picture of herself dressed in full "traditional" southern regalia.

Not a big deal, in of itself, I know.

Now I need to introduce the subtext to this plot line. You see, the front office personnel in this particular practice were predominantly non-white Baptist Americans...I believe out of 24 combined employees in the billing, front desk, phone reception, and medical records, only five were Crackers.

So, "Bertha" brought in this picture of herself in this parade...decked out in some crazy ankle-length dress that looked as though it would have been more appropriate on Anne Boleyn, instead of a mid-19th century southern woman in the scorching summer heat. But I digress...

The far more interesting thing about this photograph was the massive Confederate flag being propped up in the background. It was being held by several people...one of whom was dressed in a white sheet, with what was clearly a hood pulled back.

I was the first person to stumble upon this picture (clipped from the local newspaper!!!) she had pinned to the bulletin board (and EVERYONE passed by the board, including our two non-white nurses and our non-white P.A.). Now, I am not particularly politically correct, and I prefer to let the chronically vacuous-minded to wallow in the crapulence of their own ignorance. So I let it remain on the board (although my boss, the local V.P., thought perhaps I should have taken it down immediately...what fun would that have been?).

Needless to say, it caused a deal of friction.

So to add chaos to the entropy, I printed out a sign in bold 72-font that read:

"North 1
South 0".

Some of my co-workers got the joke. Others didn't want to. But she didn't work there much longer.

Nope, not quite John. Most of the "southern Folk" from FLA live in the panhandle (the Redneck Riviera, as we lovingly call it) and the inland areas (ike Gainsville, etc). The snow birds tend to gravitate to the Atlantic coast touristy towns...You won't FIND a more Southern culture than the FL panhandle.

And while we're talking about racist cultures...
