I think personally I have to go with Neal. Just amazing in everything and never really lets you down musically.

SP for me. They're all very good but The Voice moves me the most out of all of them.

I voted Neal, but vocally, definitely Perry.

Being front row, smack dab in front of Neal in Orlando in '06 is something I'll never forget.

This one isn't close...It's Perry! I think Neal is an IMMENSE talent, but not many would know about it, if it wasn't brought to the forefront, with Perry's vocals. I also think Cain is a GREAT songwriter, but with nobody to sing his lyrics, they never would have seen the light of day!

Neal Schon and Steve Perry get my vote equally. Neal has just been able to stand the test of time better. In Perry's defense, his "instrument" is much more susceptible to wear and tear, though.

Glad you clarified that SJ! Neal could play until his fingers fell off! There simply isn't wear and tear on Neal's fingers, which is why it is ALWAYS impossible to compare a vocalist to a guy playing an instrument. I can't think of a single singer (Henley is the only guy who even comes close!)who sounds better, or even as good today, than they did 30 years ago. A lot of guys who play instruments for a living seem to get better with age! Singing is simply an occupational hazard!

Neal, hands down. Perry was an amazing talent to be sure, but Neal sings, writes, and plays some of the most melodic guitar that we'll ever have the pleasure of seeing. To be totally honest, my top 3 would probably be Schon, Rolie, and Perry in that order.

Neal Schon. Perry is the man vocally. However, Neal's body of work over his carreer is absolutely stellar. Not really a bad release in there (IMO). Never was a huge fan of Perry's FTLOSM. I think Herbie put it best when he said something like Neal is the quintessential guitar expressionist.

I voted Perry. The voice is the most important voice as has obviously been proven over the last 3 years. Without Perry, Journey never makes it. Without Perry, Neal might not ever really "make it."

Neal is amazing to be sure, but it's clear he has struggled since Perry left.

I guess perry being overshadowed by Neal all those years in Journey cost him in my list.

I had to vote for Perry. The question was "who's most talented," not "most valuable." True, Neal has been in Journey since Day 1. He IS Journey now. But in their heyday, SP was the most talented AND most valuable. Herbie knew it, Neal/Jon knew it, everybody knew it. That's why SP got his way on everything.

Look, in the ROR documentary, at one point, Neal was all giddy like a kid in a candy store and said to the camera:
"I've made it, I'm safe." And, why .... because SP came back to the band after ST, that's why. He had said in earlier interviews, before Journey took off (with SP as the singer), that he was seriously thinking about giving up music and go sell ladies' shoes.

And, this from Jon, also in the ROR documentary:
"I just knew if I could get into a band with the kind of energy, with a great voice, that I was going to make it in this business. And that's exactly what has happened."

Alas, it was all short-lived excitement--for everyone involved, bandmembers/crew/fans alike, that SP just couldn't continue on after ROR.

I fully disagree here. You must be forgetting your history here. Neal Schon was asked by both Santana and Clapton to play with them. The guy was a success before he even knew Perrys name. Just because he went balls out and did it on his own does not mean that he needed Perry. Its really the other way around if ya think about it. Neal is the only one in the band that had some real success before AND after the classic Journey line up.

Case in Point-
Before Journey, Santana. Freaking Santana!!!!! At 15.

After Journey, circa 86.... Voice, was nominated for a Grammy. Bad English had a couple number 1's... not in that order but compared to Street Talk and FTLOSM, it kinda puts things in perspective.

Id like to hear from the people that did not vote for Neal or Steve P. I'm intrigued...

This is tougher than you would think. Guitar has become > voice since Perry has 'suffered' for his art. And I would think Neal's guitar work would outshine all but the voice. So does it balance out? I honestly have to give the edge to Perry as an overall talent. I forgot to add production, which I would rank higher on Perry for his DVD and repackaginging work of the Journey catalog over Neal and Jon's attempts with Red 13 and the 2 added tracks on Arrival...

I voted Perry.
I bought Perry's solo stuff because his voice 'stirs' me. But I didn't buy any of Neal's side project stuff even though I rate his talent very highly. That says it all really.
Perry's voice is the main attraction for me, so I vote for him.

I don't attribute their big success during the classic lineup period to JUST Perry, though. I think it was a magical blend of all of them together at the right place, right time.

A magical blend which holds us all enthralled to this day.

By far it's Neal Schon. Journey's sound lays sorely on the fingers of Schon... even though Perry got there at the right time, Neal's guitar work is just as equally god like to the music as is Perry's voice of the vocals. Plus, Neal has been on EVERY EXISTING JOURNEY RECORD from day one. The guys a rock god.
