High School Sports are unfair!

Anyone else ever encounter coach's playing favorites
at their or their kids' high school?
My boy is a wonderful athlete but the coaches only
play to a certain few over and over....arrggghh....

It's a rampant problem. I could've played football for a bigger and better school had my coaches not spent so much time and energy marketing their injury-prone, borderline-retarded sons and their friends who all either ended up in jail or flunking out of college.

Politics kept me from starting alot early in my high school career, so whenever I did get to play, I made a freaking impact. By the time Junior year rolled around, I had proved myself so much, they had no choice but to start me both sides, every game.

"Oh, we'll stick ProgRocker53 in for the last defensive drive of this half, he can't hurt us too much...."

....Boom. Sacked the quarterback on the first play, stripped the ball, ran it in for six.

Egotistic asshole coaches didn't play me again the rest of the game. Made no sense at all to me.

in san fran area the DADS PUT OUT and those boys get to play.

You are onto to something here. There is no doubt this shit happens. You have even a bigger problem than the rest of the nation because you live in Texas. HS football in Texas is huge. Bigger than big. Watch Varsity Blues if you don't believe me. That movie is so right and so dead on. There is a good ol boys club in HS sports. You could go to the athletic director but he his probably a good buddy of the head coach. You could move to another district as well. It sucks and I feel for you.

Well, as a youth basketball coach, I can assure you that at least where I coach, the moms are not putting out. And believe me, some of them could earn their kids quite a bit of playing time if they would too, but they dont. But seriously, I'm doing my best to give them all equal playing time early on, and develop them now, so that down the road, they are all good and deserving of more playing time. There is nothing worse then having to stick a kid in there who is absolutely terrible, but you have to. So hopefully I'll never have that problem. I also try to distance myself from any parents who try to get envolved more than usual. Its all very transparent to me and I could never understand how coaches could let parents kiss up to them, and all of a sudden they're playing that kid a lot more often. Its all politics!

I'm speaking in general here, not specifially about the author of this thread or any contributor-BUT, it has been my experience that every parent thinks their child is the star player. Coaches have a very hard job, they can't please everyone-in fact they can only please a very few. If the team is having a losing season and there are better players sitting on the bench then it needs some attention, but if they are doing OK-why mess with a good thing? There may be other factors involved in deciding who plays and who doesn't. A player with a bad attitude will sit out more than one with a good attitude. One that pays attention at practice will play over one who screws around. Players that miss practice will play before those that miss it often.

When you talk about fathers playing their own sons-well, they deserve to. If the fathers are coaching on a volunteer basis they deserve to play their sons more. If you don't like it-well, volunteer to coach-that will solve the problem. Most people are not willing to make the time to volunteer.

I was the student athletic trainer & stat keeper. I was on the sidelines for every JV & Varsity game for three seasons. I could've graduated a whole year early but stuck around one more semester just for football. I loved it. I even got the Gatorade bath after we won our Homecoming game my Senior year.

It's a two way street, Liz. I coached different high school sports at different schools for several years and there are also idiot parents. I don't know how many times I heard the passing comments like "if he had played Billy we would have won." or "What a bad decision to take out my Johnny when he did...cost us the game." I finally had enough with a particular parent and rather than tell her that her kid sucked when she presented me with "Why doesn't my son play more?" I responded, "Ma'am, Tony is our 10-10 guy. He only plays when we're up 10 or down 10." I then turned and walked away. The sport in question was baseball.

Liz, there's not much you can do in your present situation. Tell your son that sports, like life, isn't always fair, but if you stick with it you'll eventually be rewarded. I'd also motivate him by challenging him to work so hard and get so much noticeably better that the coach has to play him. If that doesn't work give me that fucker's name and number. deano and I will give him a ring.

actually a player with a bad attitude that screws around will still play if he is the best player, people want to win. Not all people think their kids are stars, some trailer park parents sit and look at their kids and are just thinking about getting home to have another beer.

The whole problem is we were all LIED TO when we were younger, THERE IS NO SANTA, tooth fairy or easter bunny. WE WERE LIED TO so we all rage out in revenge by playing the wrong kids or spitting from tall buildings.

Nope. Every year is the best year of my life. That's just my philosophy.
I don't miss high school... just a cold October friday night spent running around in mud & blood. I even once got a flag thrown on me for *ahem* "taunting" the opposing team's QB, our head coach (OMG, headcase) turned around and shouted "Who was that on!?!?!" about to murder someone, and our half back, Matt, stepped up and said "Me, Coach, my bad." He got fried. Those guys were the greatest.

YEP! It only took me about twice in the locker room to set them straight and convince them that when I walked in I didn't want them to take off the towel they were wearing, I would not accept their "invitations" and yes, I had seen bigger.
