Best Live Performance You've EVER Heard?

With the advent of most musicians using pre-recorded backing vocals and in some cases lead vocals  , I was wondering what the absolute best LIVE performance everyone has ever heard. Post a link, if you have access to it. For me, it's easily "Mother Father" from the 1981 Journey concert. I've seen the performace hundreds of times, and am still in complete awe of Perry's performace.

And it looks we have Rick to thank for that clip.

Also, I understand that this is the song Deen willl continue to sing this tour, although I'd love to see what AP could do with it.

;)

He also sang After The Fall in Vegas. Smart move on Journey's part. A 40 year old Arnel can get some vocal rest during those breaks.

JoePa said something positive about Perry? You sure he wasn't talking about Augeri  Then again, Augeri couldn't get through the first verse of that tune without his voice imploding!

for what it's worth, there IS a live recording of Augeri on that song---and he does much better than one would expect. Rather surprising actually in light of the end, but there were some nights that he was really on.

I didn't get see Journey in their prime and I suspect that would be the pinnacle. However, I did get to see Boston on the Third Stage tour which was really good. The Storm was really good in 91? with Brian Adams as well. I think the best live performance I seen was Goodbye Thrill last fall in SB. They were better live than on the cd. And the cd is damn good!

I would LOVE for someone to post this, because I would be STUNNED if Augeri did even remotely well singing that track. Nobody sings that song well. I think Deen does an okay job on that tune, but he's not nearly as good on it, as some suggest he is. It's not a knock on Deen...It's just a bitch of a song to sing. I thought Augeri sounded great on the post-Perry tracks, but almost always struggled on the Perry tracks. I've never thought it was much of a coincidence that more times than not, Journey opts not to perform "Mother Father" in concert. I suspect Neal is still in awe when he watches Perry on that tune.

pretty impressive to say the least, as is the Still She Ride performance from Japan on the Frontiers tour.

One non-Journey vocal performance that HAS to be in the running is Sam Cooke's Bring It On Home To Me rendition on the Harlem Square Club live album. From the long intro with the You Send Me portion to the gospel-induced song with the audience going absolutely ballistic, there is very little similarity to the rather sterile studio version. Unfortunately, no youtube links out there.

Not bad for Augeri but, and I say this with no disrespect whatsoever, nowhere close to the same league as Perry. If there was ever a song where Perry distanced himself from other singers my miles and miles and miles, it was this one.

they probably don't perform it a lot because it is murder on your singer to have to hit those notes. I noticed someone found the Augeri version and he drops the pitch down a little bit from some of the highest notes, but if he sounded that good on a regular basis, he would still be there. Of course, singing Perry night after night takes a toll on anyone--even Perry.

I think Augeri knocked that out of the park. He was hitting some glass shattering notes there. He was pretty fucking good when his voice was healthy. Perry was unmatchable on that song though. I don't see them letting Arnel sing that one because that song requires a lot of emotion and cultural understanding to be done well.

Chuck Mangione - Memphis, 1981, I think.
The mix, albeit more impression because of age, was mint.
But considering age, I guess KISS 1977, was probably more impressionable...although I'm sure the sound sucked, but the show was indelibly classic.

Agreed John, easily the best performance I've ever seen. They were firing on all cylinders on that one. I'm sure that's as close as we're going to see to perfection in this lifetime.

i look at dvds released from the 70's.. and think.. this band had no idea this performance would be in the hands of the fans..
some of those shows were so loud that sometimes it took a few seconds to figure out what song it was.. im

just amazed at how good some of the old rock bands really were with primitive PA's etc just stacked from each

side of the stage to almost the ceiling.. ......remember how you could have front row seats BUT have a huge stack of speakers right in front of you???

Just watching that makes me appreciate Perry that much more. You can see when he lowers that mic at the end just how much that takes out of him vocally! He gave us the best of what he has........110%

Having never seen Journey live (I don't expect they went to Scandinavia much) I am totally envious of you all :)

In terms of vocals, the best performance I have ever seen was Joe Lynn Turner and Glenn Hughes in Copenhagen in 2004 on their HTP 2 tour. Jeezuz Mary and Joseph those guys rock live! Especially Hughes blew me away with this very track!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgBRm7uah-4

In terms of instrumental playing (although Gillan also kicked total ass), my favourite live performance is Deep Purple on their 2006 Rapture of the Deep tour, here a show from Brazil that year:

Thanks for posting. As someone else here already said...it's an ok performance (by Augeri standards), but it's simply not in the same stratosphere as Perry's performance from Houston in 1981! I also like Deen's performance on this track (more than Augeri's). Even though I think Deen does a good job on the song, I just feel like something is missing. I guess what I'm really saying is the guys I've heard take on this monster track simply don't have the power and raw emotion that Perry had, and without those components, "Mother Father" simply isn't the same song! The power, range, and pure, raw emotion Perry exudes in this performance is simply jaw-dropping. Anyone who ever doubts the immense talent this guy had only has to watch this performance!

i sat in on a soundcheck of dennis de young's last summer, and they were working up show me the way, with a full accapella intro, 6 voices it was awesome.
