Great to hear this in a live mode. Nice if Perry had done a few shows for TBF.

Here's another great track with Augeri from the same poster. It's from 2003 but I can't tell if its live or memorex. Sounds pretty close to the Arrival track.

Ok...Time for some honesty here. That was DREADFUL! Listen to that recording of "Mother Father" and then dial up Perry singing that same song on youtube! It's almost embarrassing how bad it is! I think Arnel actually may have the pipes to pull that track off. I've yet to hear ANYONE (and yes, I include Deen) master that song the way Perry did! There isn't a single track in the entire Journey catalog that illustrates Perry's vocal brilliance off more than "Mother Father"!

It was all live in 2003, that was a good year for him he went downhill in 2004 afterward that they were supposed to take a break, you know as Paul Harvey says "you know the rest of the story"

I knew adding M/F would be trouble. :) Perry's Houston DVD performance is amazing. No one can match it.

I believe the "first year with Journey" reference was to "Mother Father" from 1998, which was indeed Augeri's first year as a Perry wannabe

I would, and did  I was actually being kind (for a change) The truth of the matter is that the performance posted had absolutely NOTHING remotely remarkable about it. I've heard guys performing Journey covers sound better than that, and sing with FAR more emotion (which that particular track ABSOLUTELY requires)!

stevew2 wrote: no one will even come close to Perrys performance of that song. That is a given

No argument from me there! That said, that performance by Augeri wasn't remotely good! Augeri did FAR better when he wasn't attempting to imitate Perry, which is why I liked the guy FAR more on "Arrival", than when he was attempting (and failing miserably) to sing Journey's back catalog!

Just because there wasnt anything remarkable about it doesnt make it dreadful. That song was to high for him, thats why Deen got it.He was good in 2003,and anyone that sings for Journey will try to sound like Perry. Especially with the current line up.He didnt try to sound like a clone, he put his own style into the songs also. His voice couldnt handle the over touring. He did it longer than Perry. They should have hired an 18 year old if they wanted to tour like 18 year olds

You have your opinion, and I have mine! We can agree to disagree! To my ears, it was DREADFUL

stevew2 wrote: That song was to high for him

Most of the catalog was "too high" for Augeri. It's not a knock on the guy...It's simply a fact! I have always found Augeri to be a class act and a likeable guy. That said, he was simply out of his league, trying to sing most of Journey's back catalog!

stevew2 wrote: anyone that sings for Journey will try to sound like Perry.

"try" being the operative word in that sentence!

stevew2 wrote:He didnt try to sound like a clone, he put his own style into the songs also.

We finally agree on something  The problem with Augeri was that he simply did NOT have the range to sing the music, period, end of story! He was SUPERB on "Arrival", when trying to sing in his own natural range! One final point...The casual Journey fan (i.e. not the nuts visiting this board) have ZERO desire to hear Augeri's "own style" or anyone else's, for that matter. They want to hear ALL of these songs belted out, as close to the original versions, as possible! Neal and company finally figured that out, hence Arnel being brought in to the band!

stevew2 wrote: His voice couldnt handle the over touring.

You'll get ZERO argument from me on that point!

stevew2 wrote: He did it longer than Perry.

Right, and Ricky Mahorn played 5 years longer than Larry Bird, and Warrick Dunn played longer than Barry Sanders... What's your point?? Just because he did it longer doesn't mean he did it better! Longevity means absolutely NOTHING! I'll take quality over quantity, 100% of the time!

stevew2 wrote: They should have hired an 18 year old if they wanted to tour like 18 year olds

I would say that based upon Journey's history with lead singers, it might well come to that. Neal might be locked in his room, surfing youtube for the next Perry impersonator, as I type this

I thought Augeri did a good job on that song. That's not an easy song to sing.

John/Boston-Correct again- no emotion because it was all he could do just to try it.I went once and he was no Perry I could have supported Jeff because he did not try to sound like Perry but was a lively frontman and a real musician. Now ,I'll skip thank you.

When Steve responded, I only had 1998's WYLAW linked. I added M/F after that.

I've never heard Augeri do WYLAW live and didn't remember any clips of it until today. That's the reason for my post. Adding M/F was just fuel for the fire.

As someone who enjoys all eras of Journey, I'm don't get into comparing with Perry that much. Having a decent version of WYLAW by Augeri is pretty cool to me.

SA on "Mother Father", mmm good enough? average and passable - I guess?. Sounds like karaoke comparing it to Perry doesn't it, and he does not in any way shape or form tear the roof off the place like Perry did back in 1981, and quite frankly I believe thats as far as it goes, you won't see that happen again, not with the current lineup either. Not my favourite Perry vocal track, but certainly up there with the best of them.

SA may of technically been a part of journey for a longer period of time straight and this applies for the new Arnel Pineda aswell provided all goes well, but! Perry was with Journey when it matterd the most, all the hits were released, sales, charts, albums, constant touring, when this band was the "in thing at the time" - and I can safely say with confidence, that Perry did more for Journey and contributed more than any singer did or ever will for this band.

Thats without a doubt no one will even get close to Perry. He is the original singer, Neal can say "the real deal" over and over, Perry was the best
