If I'd been the engineer, I'd be tempted to put the hammer down.

That train you saw was European and the hammer is
always down. That looked like the German ICE train. Those fuckers run 170mph and up....
Dude, I ran San Diegans for 5 years between LA and San Diego. We get to 90 MPH...our "surfers" were Mexicans crossing the border illegally. Those fuckers would come out of nowhere and I would never see them until we were at track speed. One time, at 90Mph, I see this 30 yd old dude and 3 yr old baby riding on my front coupler! Now, I just can't lockem up....because they would go under...plus when you lock up the brakes, the wheels skid for a mile and go flat...ie, the metal burns off and you have flat wheels..end of journey. They are human beings after all....that was the best I ever handled a train...calling the Oceanside police and letting the train just glide to a stop....once stopped, I got out(which is a big no no), and ran around and grabbed the little girl....I told the "parent" that this is the last time you will ever see her." It was ugly.
