I hate most rap that I hear but I impulse-bought Dr. Dre's album The Chronic recently, having heard that it was the finest hip-hop record of all time from several sources.

I LOVE The Chronic. It's funny, witty in a few places, actually uses real instruments, there's a few moments of actual singing, and the rap flows are infectious!

I kind of want to explore more rap in this style, what with me being open minded about ALL music. Is there anyone on here that knows anything about the genre to point me in the right direction?

I hate Rap, don't care a thing for Hip Hop and if possible, will leave an area where there is Country, Western, or Bluegrass music playing.

I'd rather listen to Julie Andrews sing Edelweiss than hear Rap 'music'.

Bluegrass musicians are incredible.

Country's either a big hit or big miss for me. LOVE Alabama, Charlie Daniels Band... hate most modern pop-country.

The Chronic was an excellent album and is a great choice for your first rap album. I listen to some hip/hop so I'm not sure 100% about giving you a suggestion, but you could try Eminem or early Snoop Dogg which were produced by Dr. Dre. Those were pretty good.

I tried out Eminem. He's talented and all but I just can't get past most of the music, random sound effects, and such... plus his voice tends to annoy me. I DO like "Stan" though... powerful tune right there. "Lose Yourself" isn't bad, and I massively dug "When I'm Gone." Most of the rest I could do without.

Snoop Dogg might be a better choice for me. I LOVED his voice and flow on The Chronic. The most recognizable rapper to me, by far.

The modern crap is so mindblowingly bad I don't even know how I tolerate going out to my college bars here sometimes. The stuff I heard back in the day on MTV from Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac etc was at least tolerable and some of it I even dare to say was catchy. I hate the modern crap, absolutely hate it. Horrible.

I refer to a lot of modern mainstream rap as "Ringtone Rap."

Shit like Throw Some D's, Ay Bay Bay, Soulja Boy, Pop Lock n Drop It, Lollipop.... all that kind of stuff just annoys the crap out of me.

Your just going though a short lived phase in your life. Trust me, in a year or so your going to look back at this hip hop experience and laugh. That's what I did at least when I went through it. I was more into En Vogue, MC Hammer, Bobby Brown, OPP by Naughty By Nature and stuff like that though, to give you an idea on the time frame I'm talking about. Play your cards right and you'll come out of it unscaved. I on the other hand took it a bit to the extreme and was running with a sister. And if you know anything about sisters hanging with white guys, they have this really hell bent fantasy of spanking your bare white ass until it's red. And unfortunately that is what exactly happened to me really really late one night back at the house after we were Be-Bopping and Hip-Hopping the night away. Soon after that, I decided to go a different route and never looked back since. Trust me, it's not a pretty picture. Just play your cards right.

I think THE CHRONIC is one of the best albums of the 90's (along with Ice Cube's THE PREDATOR) Having said that, I think most hip hop (particularly NOWdays) is absoulte crap...

As for country? REAL country? Hell yeah! Gimmie Cash, Waylon and Kris any ole day of the week. But fuck this hat wearing, neo- southern rock crap that's out there in the mainstream. It's crapola!!!

Uh no, can't stand it. Rap really just irritates the fuck out of me. And, it's not music.

Rarely do you hear harmony and almost never do you hear melody in rap entertainment. I think it sucks.

I'm not much into country either but I do like the old school stuff like Hank Jr. The new stuff is intolerable with one exception. That dude from Rascal Flatts can sing like a bastard. I'd like to hear that guy do some rock, I think he'd be great. Their harmonies are pretty tough too.

A friend of mine from work had me listen to them, as he's been recently indoctrinated because of a woman. He's a great dude though, so I gave it a listen, and I agree with him and you, the guy can Flatt sing, but is wasting his talent singing shit country music. They are a great band, I don't disagree with that, but I just don't get country. At all.

LOL -- for some reason, this thread reminded me of Flavor Flav, who reminded me of The Surreal Life, which reminded me of naked girls covered in sushi. Now, the first question that comes to my mind is, how much would someone have to pay you to to eat sushi off of a naked Flavor Flav?

I couldn't agree with you more. The only thing that I get about country is it has to be supported by Budweiser. That is the only reason I can think of as to why all of the country shit makes you want to jump out of a window or drink yourself to death.

I actually quite enjoy Rascal Flatts, but I wouldn't really call them country.... that's just the kinda stuff they call country today. A couple great bands that kinda paved the way for the Rascal Flatts sound were Restless Heart and Blackhawk... Restless Heart in particular had outstanding harmonies and some great musicianship. I like that kinda music, but it's not really country. Some of those country guitar players can really burn though... it's something to behold. Some of those guys deserve a lot of respect, if not adoration.

I love nearly anything Timbaland touches. He did some of Aaliyah's best songs, and he's a huge part of Justin Timberlake's success.

NWAs first album is a masterpiece. Like a lot of art forms, you have 1 gem among 99 turds (most of which started around mid-90s and beyond); most 'gansta-rap' has devolved into appallingly unintelligent anti-poetry.

Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys (Pauls Boutique - essential) from that period are all pretty good. Also, Digital Underground and maybe De La Soul.. Outkast. That's about it. Rap is garbage now, mainly as stated previously because the beats suck, there's no melody, and the vocals are just deep-voiced talking-overs.

Also, you owe it to yourself to go out and buy anything PM Dawn released. Check out their reviews on Amazon. They were the Pink Floyd of hip-hop.
