Opening Bands

We have all been to shows where we have never heard of the opening band, or didn't care about them.

Who are some bands who shocked you and made you become fans? Or at least impressed the hell out of you?

I recently saw Ace Frehley and a band called ZO2 opened. They're from Brooklyn, and kick serious arse. Check 'em out - the singer has a great set of pipes:

Back in 1985, I saw a band called Bon Jovi open for Ratt. But I was already a fan.

I heard that when Van Halen were supporting Black Sabbath that when they had finished and Sabbath started the fans started booing because they wanted to hear more from VH. Just a tale I've heard..

i saw warrrant open for paul stanley when thier first lp came out, although im not a big fan they were very good onstage.
asia in 82 had a juggler he was great.
tesla opening for david lee roth in 87 i became a very big fan

The first time I saw Bryan Adams live was opening for Journey, during the Frontiers tour 1983, Worcester, MA. Bryan and his band were awesome!

boy did I pay attention to her stuff after that show....she was fantastic!

Saw April Wine open for Molly Hatchet back in the day. Stevie Ray Vaughan open for the Who. Lord Tracy open for Ace Frehley. Danny Joe Brown Band and The Rods open for Foghat. Queensryche open for KISS. Helix open for Dio. ALL were memorable--

Ditto. Adams put on a fantastic show. He was climbing all over the OUTSIDE of the railing on the balcony and stuff like that. He was nuts.

Saw this band called Tesla with Def Leppard on the Hysteria tour. Came to love them later, but slept through them that first concert! lol!

Primus opening for Rush...ugh, that was painful and unnecessary.

Kansas opening for ANYONE...again, painful and unnecessary :twisted:

Another thread should be "Opening Act Mismatches". I'll never forget After the Fire (of Der Kommisar fame) opening for VH on the Diver Down tour. Who booked that?

Honestly, most of the opening acts I've seen were NOT good. I saw Dokken open for Aerosmith back in the '80s, and no offense to Rip, but that night, they sucked. Saw Sheryl Crow open for the Eagles back before she was big and she was not the best either. I've seen Frampton, Foreigner, 8 1/2 Souveniers, and others open for Journey and none of them were any good. Granted, Lou Gramm was not too far removed from his problems and just didn't have the voice anymore.

I saw that tour, too. George Lynch lasted three songs, then keeled over. Aerosmith had to play an extended set, which was awesome. Another reason Dokken SUCKS!

Silvertide opened for Journey back in 02 or 03...whatever the Dead 13 tour was.

Silvertide literally blew the fucking doors off of Journey. It was a bit of a mismatch...silvertide is like the black crowes meets acdc meets tesla....

However, the writing was on the wall. I never saw a band so easily eat the headliners shit...Journey sang well, but I'm sure a good part of the a'singing' was memorex...and nut just augeri. The background vox sounded massively triggered.

Silvertide was raw, made mistakes, jumped around....but they were so FUCKING on it was hard to imagine any band following them.

It's like ACDC going on before Air Supply. it just didn't work....

Skid Row opening for Bon Jovi.

First time I saw Bon Jovi, they were opening for Judas Priest. :shock:

LOL the first time I went to a concert more for the opening band than the main one.......mind you, I did love that song "You got another thing coming" and thought Glen Tipton was kinda hot back then. :lol:

Tesla and Mr. Big were 2 bands I really wish I would have seen LIVE back in the day.
