OT - Songs from the Sparkle Lounge

OK folks...

I friggin hating this thing when I first heard it. Really...I thought Def Leppard aws trying to draw too much from their 70s glam rock roots too much and not enough 80s rock and roll.

I was wrong. This is one of those albums that needs a good 4-5 listens before you start to 'get' it. The album is strong...the songs grow on you. The thing sounds great...

I'm not going to put it up with Whitesnake's Good To Be Bad...which is still the best fucking hard rock album to be released in like 5 fucking years...

but I still maintain that 2008 is like night and day with 2007...which I think was one of the WORST years for hard/aor/melodic rock. 2008 is shaping up to be one of the best years for rock in this fucking decade. Between Whitesnakes GTBB, The new soon-to-be-released Journey record, the soon-to-be-released Extreme album, House of Lords' Come to my kingdom and this Def Leppard release....2008 is just fucking awesome.

Wow...I'm fucking schitzo. 2-3 weeks ago, I was really not too happy with rock. Sometimes it takes a slap in the face and a few more listens to really 'get it'...

Regardless, give this album a listen....it's a good one!

I played Nine Lives, the song with Tim McGraw, to my wife, who is a HUGE McGraw fan. She could not tell it was him. What a waste of a huge star that was.

I have listened to the CD a couple of times, and it is growing on me, too. Not as quickly as the Whitesnake one, tho.

Agreed, Frank. I picked it up on Tuesday and I'm really digging it. The Whitesnake CD is damn good, too.

But he sounds like ass. And he blends in too much for the rest of the song.

He sounds like Tim McGraw always sounds.... I knew it was him instantly...he sings it like he sings one of his own more upbeat, bluesier songs...like "How Bad Do You Want It"...

It's amazing how much Tim McGraw and Joe Elliot sound alike on that track. Who would have thunk it?

I've listened only twice so far, need to give it more listens.

Agreed on Whitesnake, I love the new one, have listened to that a lot in the last week.

Thank you. I'm quickly beginning to HATE McSquawk almost as much as I already hate his wife, Faithless Hillbilly.

Damn, first singing with rappers now screwin up DefLep? What the hell's wrong with DL anyway. So desperate for attention they have to get countryfries with it?

I thought McGraw was pretty cool when he was an Indian outlaw, but then he married Faith and became McWhupped.

You just dont get it...

if I were married to someone that looked like Faith Hill, I would swim through 9 miles of shark infested piss on a daily basis just to eat the corn out of her shit...She's that perfect!

Giving it a shot b/c I buy EVERYthind Def 1eppard puts out...we'11 see if it tops "X" which to me was the best since Hysteria.

"Nine Lives" is a rockin' tune, best one on there imo. But how much gayer than Elliot doing a duet with a country crooner? Just stupid. Haven't checked the DL threads but I'd guess most fans aren't too happy with it. Give me a version without McGraw and I'll buy it.

But hey, they're trying to get the women's dollars this round. Have at it.

As for Hill, yeah she USED to be cute. CW for the win.

After three spins I don't think its nearly as good as Slang, Euphoria, or X. Just a step up from Yeah.

First, I don't see how any DL album of original material can be compared to thier covers album...but that's just me.

I see it as another layer in the Def Leppard cake...we go from Slang, to Euphoria, to X & now to SFTSL...all 4 albums are different animals, IMO. Neither one sounding like the other. There are common elements that tie them all together as legit DL albums, but they're different enough to stand on their own.

I'm on my 3rd spin...I like the new one quite a bit. I think it's a strong album from start to finish with a good combination of hooks & ambition, depending on the song...I'm satisfied.

At least they've climbed on the aggressive self-promotion train for this album (which JE has said he loathes) and are doing TV and Radio spots to promote it. It's cool to turn on TV or radio and hear somebody talking about Def Lep as if they are current rather than a nostalgia act.
