Another British band (actually Scottish) worth checking out is Gun. Try anything from their debut album 'Taking on the World', eg 'Better Days', 'Money', or even the title track here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWoezmNaSYw. It's hard to believe the average age of this band was about 17 when they wrote this album in 1987.

Prog, have you ever heard THE WILD THE WILLING AND THE INNOCENT from 1981? I think it's UFO's best - CHAINS, CHAINS, LONG GONE, MAKIN MOVES and a ton of other great tunes. Check it out, if you can find it.

Too funny but they did a good job on it. Good to find some more classic AOR sounds.

Folks would be shocked at how prolific the guys were in the late 80s and through the 90s up to Maurice's death. And album every few years and very much AOR. Not so much touring due to Barry having rheumatoid arthritis, but I have more albums by them since 1987 than I did from 1967-1987!

Thanks for the welcome. Iron Maiden did do a version of this track, but i think it was only a b side to a single. A very different interpretation of the song, but equally valid. I guess the version that you'll prefer depends on which direction you come to melodic rock from. I think Journey are the meeting point between the metal guys, the prog guys and aor guys (and girls). I come from the aor side of things. I'm a sucker for a hook.

However, the cool thing about this site is that there are so many people coming together with different musical tastes. To me that is the amazing thing about Journey - their ability to appeal to people across the spectrum of musical tastes.

However, that album did contain one melodic rock masterpiece in the track " crack alley". Couldn't find this track on Youtube but trust me you'll love it.

Hi Duncan, I saw FM about 20 times in the 80s, good, lets say, polished as they were live, I never thought they had that etxra Elvis in them to be real contenders...? Just never had enough roughness round the edges. They should have gotten rid of Steve Overland's bro on guitar, who was most unremarkable and got someone who could play like Gary Moore (circa Corridors of Power). They could have rocked with Steve's voice!

Hi Marc,

That's exactly what they did do! I don't think Chris Overland was kicked out exactly, but I think I read he had family commitments and didn't want to tour. He was replaced by Andy Barnett. He brought them a harder edge but I preferred the slicker sound.

Got to agree with you about Corridors of Power, Gary's best album by a mile in my opinion.
