Awesome, awesome, AWESOME Journey song.

Time to get this in some setlists, boyz ROR material aside from BGTY and IBAWY (which I still want in the sets) is CRIMINALLY underplayed live.

BTW...is it standard tuning on the bass. I've only ever played it on guitar.

You know what one of the best parts about Raised on Radio is? Neal's tone. I love it when he plays a Strat (or whatever single coil 80s machine he was using on this album)... it really brings out some of the best parts about his playing. His touch and emotive runs really shine with that kind of tone. I'll Be Alright Without You's outro solo is heavenly

Agreed. And OYLS is a really, really great tune. Perry soars on this one. But you know what one of the worst parts about ROR is? The bass overshadowing Neal's guitar! He's practically invisible on this album even when he's playing. Some people knock Ross' base playing, but I prefer it because it blends seamlessly into the songs and compliments Neal without competing with him. Just my 2 cents.

Still, some great tracks on that album.

He wasn't using a Strat. He was using a "Schon" guitar that had a humbucker and a single coil. Modified tone of course. The guy is one of the "Tone Masters" like Eric Johnson. :-)

I guess it just depends on what you look for in bassists.

Yes, Ross is very good for those seamless lines that blend in well.. you almost can't pick out his lines sometimes, but if they're switched up it makes a huge difference (see: FITH re-recording). He has some fun bubbly fills too... very workmanlike, does what he's supposed to... stays in the background, keeps the rhythm.

HOWEVER, in my personal taste, I tend to prefer the bass to be more up-front in the mix and carry the song a little more. Randy's lines, and most of Ross's pre-Perry lines, are more fulfilling to me. They have more of a "jive" to them, so to speak. It seems like every time I listen to a record with Randy Jackson basslines I enjoy it immensely.

My personal favorite Randy Jackson bassline outside of this one, would have to be either "After the Fall" or BOC's "Shooting Shark."

Not that anyone cares, but my college buddy, David Barrera, was Randy Jackson's bass tech for awhile and worked with Steve Perry as well. He left West Texas and bus driving behind and went to California to make it in the music business. Well, we of course all laughed. He ended up getting work out there and eventually worked with, I think, Kevin Olsen's studio. Later he was Randy's bass tech. He went on to work with Madonna and Kenny Loggins, and is even credited "officially" on some of the Loggins stuff. At any rate, one time he called me and played his phone message from Randy. Too cool.

Once you love somebody is my fav. off ROR. I can listen to it all day. Underrated . Shame.
