OT Can Greg Maddux win 400 games?

I'm sticking to what I said a few years ago...yes, he will win 400 games. I saw him win #310 from the second row at Wrigley and I swear he's just as good 40 wins later. The guy has an effortless motion and relies on movement and brains, two things that tend to not go away. I say he plays 3 more years after this one and indeed wins 400 games. He's the best baseball player I've ever seen, and he's most certainly never taken any steroids or HGH. They should make him the first ever player inducted while playing. From spring training to games to in between starts to nightlife to the off-season, this guy has done it all right.

Defintely a "pitchers' pitcher". One of the best ever. I can't say I see him getting to win #400, but it would be great if he did. At age 42 I don't see that happening. I'd like to be wrong about that though.

The thing is is that he's no better or worse than he was 5, 6 or 7 years ago. The guy is amazing...simply amazing. Makes all of these hot shot flame throwers that blow their arms out overthrowing look like chumps.

He's one of the greatest pitchers of all time. But no, I don't think he gets 400 wins.

throw him out there against the Giants for the rest of his starts and he does it easy....

LOL...I think
I could go 5 good innings against them.

He's not getting 400! He'd probably have to win 15 a year for the next 3 to realize that milestone, and it's just not happening at the age of 45! Maddux is definitely an impressive guy. Not sure he could ever even hit 90 on the gun, but the guy just knew (and still does) how to pitch!

Unless he goes to a winning team or the Padres start winning, he'll be lucky to hit 375.

I think whether or not Greg Maddux wins 400 games is up to Greg Maddux. He'd probably need to go 3 full, injury-free seasons after this. I see no reason why he couldn't do that. The guy is simply Superman. And I'm fucking ecstatic that he'll pass up that fat-faced, egotistical, punk, sell-out Roger Clemens in wins. Maddux is simply better. Plus he's not a cheater. We'll never see another pitcher win as many games as Maddux will...ever.

He and John Smoltz are my two favorite pitchers... ever. Both of them are classy, talented, awesome, and of course were/are Braves.

He's an average-slightly above-average pitcher now.
Not TOTALLY hanging on like The Big Unit but I think 400 would be cheapened if Maddux does it in a bunch of years where he wins 8-10 games.
His prime, though, the 4 Cy Youngs run, he was arguably the best righthanded starter in history for that kind of stretch.

Glad you mentioned that because Sports Illustrated did an article a few years back where they compared his best 3-4 year run to that of
any pitcher
ever, and relative to the league's e.r.a. Maddux was the most dominant ever in terms of e.r.a. over that period.

I got to see him pitch live one time, in Atlanta, against the Marlins. He beat them pretty handily, and he just made it look so effortless. Terrific pitcher.
I'll be very surprised if he even makes it to 370, though. I think he'll hang it up pretty soon. I would love to see him make 400, but I don't see it.

That stretch, 20 wins and the Cy hardware was a GD birthright.
Bigger picture, his whole first Cubs tenure through the end of his Atl tenure, STILL might be the most impressive RHP career ever. Better than Rocket Bobby (who's pre-'roid success was preceeded by 4 average years), probably better than Seaver, don't know how long Bob Gibson dominated like MadDog during that stretch.
Obviously you've got dudes like Walter Johson, Cy Young, Matthewson from the old school.

Rhiannon!!!! I am a big Braves fan also!!!! Im at the Ted at least 15 games a year! Have to agree with you on Smoltzie and Mad Dog. They are the best. I wish Greg would get all of his future records back in Atlanta with the Braves.

Smoltz is filthy, a sure-fire Hall Of Famer, but too much of a priss/pussy/whiner for me.
Shut and pitch.
MadDog has never bitched aloud a day in his career.

I love the "I don't really give a fuck. I'm just here to throw this stupid fuckin' sphere around" on field perception Maddux exudes when in actuality he's as fierce a competitor as has ever played the game. He's just so mentally belittling. It has to
suck making an out against a guy that seemingly doesn't give a shit and looks like he's a fucking accountant.

Only to the outside world does he look like an accountant.
In MLB from '88 to about '01 all of baseball was intimidated with that guy on the hill.
That's amazing.

Fucker just threw 6 scoreless (earned runs wise) the other day. Simply amazing that he still has those those types of outings. The Padres are a hitter or two away from making a decent run. When you have Peavy, Young, and Maddux you'll eventually right the ship.

I wish....I hold out hope that maybe Atl will trade for him this season considering the pitching woes they are facing.

Yeah, aside from Gonzalez, their entire lineup has sucked the big one.

If half of his career would not have been wasted on the suck ass Cubs, he probably be at 400 right now. It's going to be tough, I think he needs to get on a real good team to get there though.

As a lifelong Cubs fan living in Atlanta Braves territory, it killed me when the Cubs traded him to the Braves. All my Braves friends gave me shit for a long time about that as he won Cy Young after Cy Young.
Maddux also comes across as very cerebral in interviews, kinda Steve Carlton-esque but without the wierdness Carlton had.
As much as I like him, I seriously doubt he'll ever see 400 wins. BUT...he can get to 374 which would make him 3rd all time. Considering in the old days the guys pitched 50 games a year, count on this...
No one will EVER, EVER pass Maddux from here on out.

I'm not so sure about that...Never heard of any rumors with him and 'roids and the dude's had lots of injury problems throughout his career anyway. His hard-nosed style of play never bodes well for injury-free play.

I love watching him work...he doesn't overpower hitters like he did in his prime (mid 90's with the Braves posting sub 2.00 era's), but has evolved his game into one of pounding the corners of the strike zone with pinpoint control and giving up very few walks. First ballot HOFer for sure.

Greg Maddux
never threw in the mid 90's. He generally topped out between 88 and 90 back in the day, and I know that because I sat in the scout section a few times at Wrigley and saw the actual radar guns. These days he generally throws between 82 and 86.
