I change my oil once a year...always have. I've never had a car take a shit on me before 150,000 miles either. People that get their oil changed every 3,000 miles are about as sharp as a baby's ass.

We go between 5000 & 7500 with both cars, usually closer to 7500, Toyotas can handle that, lol.

My brother-in-law had a Honda all through college that he NEVER changed the oil in, & that damn thing still ran just fine, lol.

technically, engine oil can suffer viscosity breakdown after about 7.5k. They used to use a rule of thumb of 5k to play it safe, now they say 3k.

Frankly, if you're going past 7.5k alot, you're taking chances with your engine...

but I see no reason to get it changed any more frequently than every 5-6k

I've noticed that if I go much over 5000 between oil changes, I start having some issues.

I've never changed my oil every 3000 miles and always thought it was the biggest scam on the planet. Until places like Jiffy Lube started popping up on every corner, even the manufacturers weren't suggesting an oil change every 3000 miles. It seems that most manufacturers have now gotten away from the every 3000 mile suggestion. Every foreign car I've ever driven suggests an oil change every 5-10K miles, and I've never had an engine issue following those guidelines.

GM says DO NOT change it prior to that!!! I thought all cars did that now???

Typically if you use synthetic oil, you can go much longer. Probably 10,000 miles or more. However, my waranty required that I change mine every 7,500 miles with synthetic oil. Because when the oil is drained, only about half of the oil comes out because it has dual oil coolers which are in the front and the engine is in the back.

I change the synthetic oil in my BMW every 5k and the standard oil in my girl's collector (classic) car every 2,400 to 2,800 miles. But I don't drive hardly ever though. I think if you really want to save some oil, take away the demand for gasoline by walking.

I usually walk or take public transit if need be. BMW is in case I need to do some serious grocery shopping and/or have visitors I need to bring sight seeing and the classic car is in case I or my girl feels like going from 0 to 60 in about 5.7 seconds on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

I have the original owners manual for my '31 Ford and it says to change the oil every 500 miles. Five HUNDRED! It has NO oil filter.

Well, I do have a big problem which is too many cars. One should be enough, but there are two of us here, my girl and I. She's got the classic car and I have the other one. I'd like to get rid of the classic car but I think she wants to keep it. But we can't use the classic car like we do the other one. We both had worked so hard for years to get the classic car completely restored and driving it around will only wear it back out again. On the other hand, if we need to go somewhere important like to pick up her family at the airport when they come from Japan to visit, we need a car that can handle a few passengers and all their luggage. I'd really love to get rid of that classic car, but she has a friggin fit when I go anywhere near that topic. Never the less, it is fun I admit to get on it and pass up a bunch of idiots on the road who I can't figure out how they managed to get a drivers license.

Yes, the older vintage cars need to have their oil changed more often because those engines of that era run really rough around the edges. Engines designed now are very tight and so they can go longer without dirtying the oil with metal fragments.

Even when we were rebuilding my girl's car engine, we didn't need to use white lithium that much. They got some other stuff instead that's much thinner/lighter. The tech told us that white lithium is for 70's and older engines pretty much. The newer engines are now really tight from the start and don't need the lithium on the rebuild.
