Sammy Hagar gets show going with school donation

The live auction at the Oak Hill School fundraiser was running late, delaying the start of a comedy set by Dana Carvey and Robin Williams, so Marin rock star Sammy Hagar decided to get it over with in a hurry.

He and his friend, the longhaired, bearded venture capitalist Larry Goldfarb, agreed to put up $50,000 each to buy out the entire auction, raising quick money for the Marin City school that serves autistic children.

"It wasn't showing off. I just got caught up in the moment," Hagar explained. "Autism gets very little attention, and I had just been made aware of the fact that it's controllable and treatable through good teachers and good programs. I thought, 'How wonderful.' I just got caught up in all that."

Hagar pledged the money at the school's April 25 fundraising dinner and comedy show at the Regency Center in San Francisco. He handed over the check at the school Thursday.

The donation by Hagar and Goldfarb allowed the comedy portion of the evening to get under way. "Dana and Robin both thanked me," Hagar said. "They got down on their knees and said, 'Outta sight, now we get to go home early, too.' All in all, it was awesome. It was comic relief."

Very nice of them to do that...speaking as a mom to a low-functioning Autistic girl. The rate of this disorder is frightening and there are growing shortages of programs/funds/therapists for Autism. It can't be cured, but some Autistics can benefit from services...unfortunately, not even these services help ALL kids...I finally halted her Behavioral therapies (Discreet trial training - ugh!) because her screaming during sessions was unbelievable. We also took her off the medications (medications that the teachers/therapists thought that might help reduce the screaming - not) ...stopping these things has actually reduced her excessive screeching and she isn't getting up in the middle of the night running thru the house! Everything is trial and error...exhausting.

Way to go, Sammy! I hope people all over the country who read the article will be motivated to donate money when they can to organizations that serve children with autism and other special needs in the own communities. They really need it.
