Arnel singing Journey from May 15

I came across these clips of Arnel singing at a farewell gig in his hometown just a few days ago. These are two short (less than a minute each) clips of Open Arms and Faithfully. Give them a listen. He is hitting these notes with ease. No straining at all. And the accent is less and less noticeable. This is shaping up to be a damn good tour.

Faithfully:

This guy is damn good.

I agree, he has the chops to sing these songs. But why is he dragging the notes out like that? Maybe he's trying to put his own spin to them?

Blame it on Pilita Corrales.
Two generations of Filipino vocalists grew up thinking all that 'sustain' is a good thing.

I've heard enough of everyone and their mother singing the old stuff.
The new stuff is what I'll form my opinion on.

Back when he made his Chile debut, I thought he sang these two songs the best.
Neal's blustery oft-invoked "Escape 2000" talk aside, he has found a damn good balladeer in Arnel.

DANG- This guy is so friggin' good. I cannot wait to get the new stuff and go to a Journey show. I'm glad they went with the guy that could hit these notes. I like the fact that he holds out some of the notes. Makes the songs a bit different than by the numbers...

I really don't care about a little accent. I think it is kind of cool actually. Being from New England where we have a "micro-accent" every 50-miles (I am not exaggerating) I am not going to slam Arnel for his accent. I can carry on a conversation with a Vermonter but someone from Natick will drive me nuts, and probably vice-versa. The quality of Arnel's voice is what blows me away. He sounds awesome on those Wal-Mart samples.

I'm not so sure its a grand idea that he's belting out songs outside of Journey?

Just like Perry did "citaaaaaay." He stretched the note out. Would have sounded
ridiculous had he sung "affairrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" and sounded like a fucking vibrator.

You guys bitch when he mimics and you bitch when he doesn't.

A friend of mine sent me a recent picture of Arnel from his time in the Phillipines, and he's
very much in shape. He's been working out like a madman and it really shows. He's taking this gig
very seriously. No fatty foods (other than fish) and no junk foods. The man eats only fish, vegetables, fruits and drinks alkaline water. I hope his hard work pays off. He's done
everything right.

YUP.
Steve F'n Perry could come back and peeps wouldn't be happy because he doesn't sound like JSS, Augeri, Jeremey or friggin Bozo the Clown. Bitchin' to Bitch. I don't get how people are whining over the smallest stuff. The guy's got the range and the power that others lacked. He got the gig. Why not be happy for him, especially since he's as close as it's ever going to get to the original (who would rather not do ANYTHING).
Whatever, I'm a happy guy about Journey's future, which is something I'd never thought I'd be a year ago.

It looks like it paid off, he looks realy good. Arnel is very humble as well, I sent him a message on his friendster account saying how I like his voice, and he actually replied, thanking me and said I shouldnt be wasting my time watching him on the internet, I realy dont know what that means but overall a very nice guy.

For the time being.
Augeri used to go for the
"in the niiiight" crescendo of DSB his first year out, too.

He also struggled from day one... Arnel seems to be head and shoulders above Augeri.

As much as I like SA, I cringed when he hit that note because he always did it in falsetto. I saw him in 98 and he did it. I was bummed...

If u ever get ur hands on a boot of his first performance, I think he goes for it in full-voice...but, man is he straining.
Sad thing is, on the pro-tooled Vegas dvd, we're led to believe some of those DSB notes have some real power behind them.

No argument there, but I don't care how good of a singer you are. This band's catalogue and touring schedule will do anybody in.

I think I have that or part of it. I remember him starting Remember Me and the band was doing a different tune or something. Haven't listened in a long time. yeah, I was really let down when I heard Vegas had been recut in the studio. However, SO many live albums are that it shouldn't have surprised me.
