I can't say that I've listened to music similar at all to three of Neal's solo albums (Beyond the Thunder [one of my top ten favorite albums of all time], Electric World, I on U).

What artists out there aren't necessarily similar to Neal's solo material, but have a type of vibe or approach that could appeal to someone who loves those albums?

Looking to get into some of that ambient, more electronic, out-there type of stuff.

Not really sure about the electronic ambient stuff, but, you might want to check out the record label that put out I on U. I think it's owned by Steve Vai and he has a number of artists in his stable. Also check out Higher Octave (I think they put out Beyond the Thunder).

I'd like to think both companies have websites with samplers of their artists. If not, poopoo on them.

you forgot Late Nite and Piranha Blues. for similar, Paul Rodgers and Company the Muddy Waters sets.

Jonathan Cain's Of A Lifetime is really fabulous--perhaps a little more mellow. Piano with a View is excellent followed by Body Language. soft jazz/new age.

Nah, I didn't forget Late Nite and Piranha Blues... love those albums.. but I just wanted to explore more in the direction of the ones I mentioned above.

Beyond the Thunder is Neal's best work IMO. LOVED LOVED LOVED Electric World and Eye on U. I hope he does more work like that. Very cinematic stuff from the main man. I always thought Neal should score a film.

I dont now if you checked out hardline, but there is a cool neal solo called 13, od some weird number, its around 11 on the cd it is really good.

the next song, In The Hands of Time keeps the groove going so keep spinnin'.

the last half of that cd is really great.

Thin or shrill, sometimes both. I think Neal himself once remarked that his guitar sound on Arrival was like a "buzz saw." Can anyone quote me on this? It's definitely irritating to hear it after hearing how great his solo albums sound. I actually think the much-maligned ROR had some of Neal's best Journey guitar sound. Beyond the Thunder has some incredible Strat and Hollowbody tones... it's definitely frustrating that such a great guitarist sounds so good live and in other avenues, but just can't seem to find a good sound on his main band.
