Anyone heard this before?

I thought the story back then was Steve refused to get together with Jon/Neal to lay vocals for this song, so it ended up only as an instrumental on Time3. So, where did this come from

It was probably just a very rough demo. If you'll notice, most of it is just humming and scatting.

I didn't listen to the Youtube link that you provided. But I know that they had done a demo of it years earlier with Steve Perry singing on it. Then Neal and Jonathan re-recorded it as an instrumental for the Time-3 box set.

The version of which you speak is readily available on most fan sites, including AA, of which i believe you are a member. It is not that rare to be honest.
The demo itself is from 1985 during the ROR sessions.

Rough demo or not, it's beautiful. Now why again did this not get recorded properly and make the album?

I said the
exact same thing a few weeks ago. These songs are
perfect examples of how Journey was more than just one man and his voice. These songs are amazing, and if Perry didn't want to lay down vocals for them this incarnation should.

They're great as instrumentals, I do not think they should put vocals on them now.

IMO, I think it sounded terrible. Not Perry's voice or the band's playing, just the sound of vocals on the instrumental.

AGREED. They stand alone perfectly as instrumentals. Not every song needs to have a vocal part to shine!!

The melody Neal plays in those tunes is as close to vocals as you're going to get in a song without actually having a singer. He is one of the few players that can pull that kind of stuff off.

That just sounded great! Nice rhythm. I loved the instrumentals on Time3 but really this song deserves vocals along the line Perry did them on the demo. It would make a very fresh song IMO...

Had they ever been released or made wider known I'd agree with you, but from the band's perspective I say throw some vocals down and release that shit!

AA? I briefly signed up for a music download site but forgot the name of it. Can you spelled it out for me?

I really like the Perry vocals on it, rough demo or not. And, yes, it is unmistakably a Journey song, complete with the signature Neal guitar sound.
They included other demos on TIME3, why not this one?

Great instrumental and should be left that way.
