OK...I'll probably get crucified for this but I actually like Arnel's version of this song better than any I've heard from Perry. I've never cared for the way that Perry sang that song live. There's something about the way he sang the chorus in the versions I've heard that I really don't like at all.

Sorry guys...I don't like the way Perry sang the chorus on that tune, especially the two words from the title. It's the only song I feel that way about.

Crucified may be a little strong! I'm thinking; buried in an Ant Hill is the best option

Does anyone know what the hell Arnel says toward the end of SW? "And if he ever hurts you, true love won't ???????? you"
WTH? It sounds more like "destructmeyou".

Before I pass final judgment I guess I should watch the DVD. although, even if I agree I'm not gonna say it. You are a brave guy!

On the Houston DVD, Perry sings that song from the bottom of his soul - he puts his all into that song. I don't think anyone could ever sing it better than that. Not to say that Arnel isn't freaking amazing himself!

I get what you are saying about the chorus. On the studio version he brings emphasist to the end of the words ( oopen arrmms ), in the live version he sort of runs it out (ooopen aaarms ) in the front so it is sounds different when he finishes. He is more of an alto on the studio version but becomes a tenor when singing it live. At least that is how I hear it.

Agreed but the way he sings the chorus still bugs me.

Perry does sing from the soul, but Arnel puts soul in the song....

I hear you. I feel the same way except I prefer Augeri's version. I would have have liked Perry's version a lot more if he had stayed true to the studio version (I feel that way about a lot of live Perry performances) as opposed to, for instance, the Houston '81 version.
Studio version: "So now I COOOOME to youuuu with OOOOOpen arms"
Houston '81 "So now I COME TO YOU WITH OPEN ARMS"
The phrase "Open Arms" is sung with the same note...and I think it loses its' intensity.
I liked the way Steve A. stuck to the studio versions, which were, in my opinion, the definitive versions in most cases.

Me too. No offense to Arnel because he is awesome but I wish things could have turned out different with him. I dont know if he reads this board but if he does I hope he knows a bunch of us really appreciated him.

Its me, and I do miss Steve A,and I wish Journey would have took a break, and maybe we woud be talking about him. As you know Journey is greedy, and we know the rest of the story. That aside. I love the music that Journey made. Personally they are retarded. I am separating myself from them personally{which i should have done in 2002}I love the music they have made, and I like most of Revelations. I would have rather had Jeremey sing for Journey, that didnt happen.I am enjoying all the new stuff, and Arnel is one hell of a singer, and a nice guy{like Augeri is} I hear accents, but I can understand every word he is singing. When I heard "Only The Young" thats what changed my mind about everything

Steve, you're talking about the Chile gig, right?
Patriotism aside, I wanted to be blown away, but found myself uneasy from the start of their set,
and not because of accent, pitch or timing problems on Arnel's part. Those things were bad enough,
but each song felt too much like Arnel was "trying" to sing it.
Then they played Only The Young... and it was like, just there.
Like he stopped trying, and just sang it.
That's when I knew there really was something there to build on.
wech
