Lay It Down

This song is 3 minutes of alto and tenor range vocals. Has S.A., J.S.S. or even Jeremy sang this? Let Arnel sing this a couple of times in the original key and the tour will be over real quick.

I'm so glad that MR apparently has a fortune teller now. Can you tell me who is gonna win the election next... :(

Lay It Down deserves waaaay more love than it gets. Not many singers could handle it.

Probably an American if things work out right :D

I like Arnel but If you think he could do this in the original range more than once on tour than I guess he is lucky you're not the one putting together the setlist for the shows.

I just think we should be enjoying what the singer of Journey can do instead of blasting all of them for what they cant. Steve Perry probably can not rap. Im not pissed about it...

I've got no opinion but I wanted to let you all know.

I freakin' love this song!

Funny to hear him say, "Here's another brand new song from our new album!".

Actually I have been on an semi-anti perry spree lately but I like all of the singers I mentioned above. I felt like giving credit to Perry for a song that only he can do Justice to (IMO). i don't think it is slam to the other guys at all.

"Lay it Down", while not one of my very favorite Journey tunes, kicks ass and takes names. It's a great rocker.

There's a reason Deen sings Mother Father too. Fact is, Arnel has a GREAT voice, but he's not as high a tenor as Perry is. Listen to interviews of both singers when they're just talking and you'll hear just how high pitched Perry is, even with the damage and at his age. The high tenor is still evident. Arnel's speaking voice is much lower compared to Perry, even today.

Revelation songs are not sung in Perry's heyday vocal comfort zone at all. I think Sunshower is in 'D', isn't it? Aren't most of Escape in 'C'? (anyone?)

For these reasons, I fear for Arnel's long term vocal health. I hope they don't burn him out.

I think that Deen sings Mother, Father for two reason.

One- He seems really, really connected to that song. It must have some personal meaning of some sort. I don't care what anybody says. His performance on the Revelation DVD has just as much soul and heart as the Houston performance years ago, if not more.

Two- They are not at a point where Deen needs to "step up" and "help out" like what was needed towards the end of Augeri, and almost all of Sotos tenure. I believe now he sings just because he can and everyone loves it. Mother Father seems to be one of his staples though.

Trust me... If it had to be done... Arnel could do Mother Father, Lay It Down, or even Patiently or Sweet and Simple if they wanted too.

I respectfully disagree with most of what you just said. The exceptions are in bold. Go back and watch the DVD of the Vegas show. Arnel's voice locked up somewhere on Separate Ways and he changed up the end to avoid the high notes. If the songs you mentioned were included in the regular set list, he would be actively frying his chords and wouldn't last the tour. Could he sing them here and there? Maybe. Regularly? Doubt it.

"Lay It Down" was definitely not played with Frontiers while I played with them. I'm not sure if Jeremey could comfortably sing this one or not, although I've never seen him not be able to hit any of the other notes. He does every song they have in the original key too, which is impressive as hell! I guess you'd have to ask him.

It depends... a key may not by necessity strain a given singer's voice more than the key a step lower just because it's in a "higher" key. It really depends on the singer. I think Arnel will be just fine. If the guys have smartened up after SP and SA, they will retain a vocal coach for Arnel to ensure he stays in tip top shape, warms up and cools down properly, and keeps his technique solid. That would be the best bet.

I noticed that. But the best thing about it is the vocal lines he replaced them with worked very nicely. Perry had the ability to modify his lines on the fly with ones that worked really well when he had to and I think Arnel has that ability as well. Much more than Augeri did.

Three years after Escape, I'm not sure Perry could even sing it in the original key anymore. I enjoy all the singers I listed above ( I'll be at the J.S.S. show in Tarzana later this month since it is only a hop and skip from where I live) but sometimes a singer might have that one song that can't be replicated in its original range and that is what I am talking about. Jeremy is the probably the only one who could get away with singing it every week close to that range without hurting his vocal chords but it would probably have to be altered a little bit. your right though, Jeremy would have to answer that.

I sang "Lay it Down" with a band in Greenville SC called "The Crunch" back in 1994-1995. I was in my early twenties then and it was easy. The only difficult part for me today is the falsetto in the bridge, which is nearly impossible to do if you are working your voice regularly live. Flipping into that register during a 2.5-3 hour show is nearly impossible....I could probably do it in the studio still after enough takes and comps. I do not hear this same register in Arnel's range. To me he sings almost exclusively in his chest voice. I haven't heard a real smooth transition out of that from the live stuff I've heard, and based on what I've heard I think anyone would be really going out on a limb to think AP could handle the altissimos in Sweet & Simple, Something To Hide, etc....I haven't heard anything resembling that sort of headroom, and that's not a knock on the guy.

Thanks, it's nice to get the answer from a professional singer ( and sorry about mispelling your name :) )

That show is great, as is this song, but those guys were either stoned or drunk in that show. I've seen the whole thing and there are too many goofs for a Journey show. It's a lot of fun to watch though.

I believe it was the 3rd show of the tour. Stone in love and Who's crying now had little flubs, but Keep on Runnin was funny because it was so screwed up you know they had to be on Steve about that one after the show. If Sony ever puts the DVD out, I think KOR is not going to be included. No studio magic can fix that one.

jeesh...steve was in his late 20's (or early 30's), Arnel is 41, not a fair comparison.

True. I think Arnel does a great job on the Perry stuff, but this song would probably be out of the range of any guy over 30 - unless they had a pair of vice grips clamped on their balls.

Funny intro to the song, Schon starts the song before Perry could finish workin' the crowd. I wonder how many times something like that happend!??

Didn't Perry have a cold that night?

This show has one of my favorite versions of 'Dixie Highway', the band is just completely jammin' in the end, and Cain was no slouch there.
