Don Dokken -- "I'm not Steve Perry"

LOL! I was listening to a new radio interview with Don tonight, and he was talking about his history as a guitar player, and how he considers himself a guitar player first, and a singer second. Anyway, so he gets signed, and his label tells him they want him to sing and be more of a frontman, and he said he told them, "I'm not Steve Perry!"

Image

Later in the interview, he was asked who his musical influences had been, and he named Journey within the first few. Little did he know that in time, his own musical legacy would eclipse that of the band who inspired him, and that the production on Lightning Strikes Again kicks the heck out of the production on Revelation. In fact, he also talked about the production on LSA, and how they kept mixing it and remixing over and over again it until it was perfect. Yes, you can actually hear the guitar, and the drums! In fact, you should buy a copy today, whether you already have it or not!

Sir,
After you have filled the container to the premarked line, exit the room. Do not flush or your test will be nullified.
Thank you

Ahh, can't do it... LSA's killer riffs and thunderous drum work have already knocked the p*ss out of me! LOL!

May be true but if I were in the closet with Don, do you think I'd be coming out anytime soon?

Man, if Don Dokken was half the singer Perry was, he would be decent.

He's got a point, the production on revelation is weak(vocally its pretty clean and crisp but instrument wise it is really lacking) I really was hoping for a nice clean crisp cd this outing, very disappointing thats 3 in a row (journey) has to figure out how to fix this canker sore of a problem

And... he'd still be touring and recording with his band. Heck, he'd even perform on crutches! I think he has before.

Thank you! I think I said it early on, but after all the hype about how Revelation was being mixed, I was really disappointed. It's not crisp to me at all... I think you are right on, though. Vocals sound great, but the instruments sound muddy. Neal's guitar solos, for instance -- when he starts blistering on the lower end of the fretboard, it's an indistinguishable mess -- can't even make out the individual notes, because it's just the notes are buried and just kinda run together. Bass isn't there, and the drums have no pop to them. This one has better production than Arrival for sure, but still pales next to something like Trial By Fire.

Now, whatever one thinks about Dokken, you can't fault the production, ever... They all sound very professional, and Don knows what he's doing. He said specifically regarding LSA that they wanted the guitars right there, the drums right there, etc., and they kept mixing and remixing until they had what they wanted. That's kinda the way I think it should be done.

Agreed. I wish they had taken a bit more time and come up with the clarity and crispness of TBF. It's very good, but not great.

That's pretty biased! the Whitenake album wasn't good at all. But I am not going to even bother with Dokken's new one - I can already see how this one is going to pan out. Let me guess, Don Dokken is a better singer than Steve Perry and Arnel Pineda? :) ofcourse i'm just breaking the chains!

LOL! No, as the title stated, Don told his record label, "I'm not Steve Perry" (exact words from the interview), regarding their wishes that he sing and front his band. But he still is a great songwriter with a beautiful voice.

If you didn't like the new Whitesnake album, you are in the minority.... haha!

Ok good, atleast we cleared that up! :)

Yeah man, like I bought the new CD here in my local store, they imported it and billed it nicely in the shops at the front counter and everything here. But I was expecting somthing more, and sadly not one song grabbed me, not like the classics do! it just doesn't compare or come close to their previous classic material. I had high hopes, maybe it's an album that grows on you? tell me it is, because Trial By Fire grew on me over time.

Is there a filter? Change it so that when anyone types "Dokken", it comes up "pantywaist" or something.

you havent been listening or plain dont like Whitesnake if you can seriously can say it isnt good at all. its great!!!!

I also would have ranked LSA higher if Don sang stronger. not better, just with more guts.
