OT: Is the mass delusion starting to ebb?

Marketing never ceases to amaze me. It astounds me how within a short period of time, people have become brainwashed into thinking that bottled water is actually "better" and "healthier" for them than city tap water. Granted, tap water in some states isn't quite as "tasteless" as in others, but tap water also contains things such as fluoride, which no bottled water I know of does. In fact, Reader's Digest had an expose on bottled water a few months ago, where they found that not only is much of it falsely advertised as being something it is not, or even is bottled from a local tap source itself, but that some of the biggest and most well known brands like Dasani didn't even pass the same standards that municipal tap must meet!

There are even myths about filtered water, and how much of a benefit it is when applied to most municipal tap. According to another article I read, the most benefit that filters offer is to make it "taste better", but that any of the impurities they claim to filter out are in such trace amounts that they are not harmful to people anyway.

My wife is one of these people who finally had to be told by her dentist that drinking tap water would actually help prevent cavities... But she's still slow to come along. I mean, brainwashing isn't always easy to reverse... Heck, when our fridge water filter light turns red, she bugs the heck out of me to replace the filter ($40 a pop), and starts stocking bottled water en masse until I do, as if the water became toxic overnight. So a few weeks ago, I was really, really curious as to what was in these filters, and took a hacksaw to the old one... and what did I find inside? No, not a dirty filter, but rather a solid core with a hole running all the way thru that looked and felt much like a giant magnet!!! I went immediately to the Internet to find out how the hell this was helping "purify" our water, and it apparently is based on ionization technology that draws the impurities out of the water that passes quite rapidly and unobstructed thru the tunnel. Whatever!!! Next time that freaking light turns red, I'm just going to press the reset button and get another 3 months out of it... haha! She'll never know the difference, guaranteed.

So we have millions and millions of Americans griping about spending $4 for a gallon of gas, when they are easily spending more than that for bottled water! And now comes this article that good ol' tap water is making a comeback. Finally, people are getting a freaking clue...

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,368241,00.html

So the next time you start to dish out a couple of bucks for a bottle of Evian ("Naive" backwards, if you haven't noticed), stop and think to yourself -- "What would Don drink?"

I can't tell the difference. It all tastes like fucking water.

I do occasionally buy bottled water when I'm driving, but that's it.

Now if only I could get a tap in my kitchen that dispensed vitamin water. That would rule.

I heart tap water. I'm guilty of feeling a bit dehydrated after a hot shower and sticking my face under the sink faucet.

Then why does the water from a fountain in schools & hospitals taste so horrid? I've been getting water delivered since the 80s because I couldn't stand the taste of tap...plus, I grew up where we had well water where all this weird stuff was floating in it & so many times rusty water came out...that's where my coke habit began...so, I was all for bottled clear water. I do give my kids tap water for the flouride.

We've got well water here and we need the filter, otherwise you get that bad smell/taste coming from the water. :? No fluoride in the well water so the kids need vitamin supplements with added fluoride. I have seen some bottled water with fluoride, can't remember the brands right now.

I DO miss living in NYC just for the tap water, it was the best.

Rip,

My wife's the same fucking way. We're getting a new fridge, and I've finally convinced her that, as a family, we should start using the tap water and hook up the fridge's ice maker. Our old fridge never had a water tap connected, thanks to the previously brainwashed owners...and my wife was all the more thankful that it wasn't connected.

Regardless, this morning...I say to my wife, "perhaps you can call poland spring today and cancel our outstanding deliveries..." She replies "only if you can ensure that the plumber is going to install an inline filter on the new line to the fridge.

My reply "The fridge already has a pur water filter built in..."

She says "I dont care, if I'm going to be forced to drink this town's tap water, I want it filtered to the nines"

Un fucking real.....when I was growing up, I never had a cavity (and mind you, being the son of a dentist, I didn't take as good care of my teeth as I should have)....

Since getting married in 1998, and switching to bottled water at my wife's insistance, I've had at least one cavity every year since 98....and as an adult, I brush 3-5 times a day, floss 1-2 times a day and get religious dental cleanings...

The flouride in tap water is a far more significant factor than these bottled water companies will have you believe.

We stopped drinking bottled water all together last Summer.
I found out that if you freeze a bottle of tap water and also
one of the bottled brands the bottled brands thaw leaving sediment
that looks like chewed up food at the bottom of the bottle.
Since then it's been only the tap stuff for us.

Is this what happens when you can't sleep?

Our tap water here tastes fine, but my in-laws' tap water on the other side of town is yucky! lol

I worked for a bottle water company called Abita Springs (hence the name Abitaman), but they had strict quality control for their water. They were one of the few that had such strict guidelines. One of the reasons I choose them to work for. But I could tell you horror stories about some of the other companies I have seen-ERIC

Abita Springs was good stuff!
...and I defy ANYONE to drink that oily shit that comes outta the tap in New Orleans/ North Shore! There ain't enough Floride in the WORLD to make me drink that shit.

We drink the tap water here, but with a Brita filter installed on the sink. The plain ole tap water in our town tastes gross. What cracks me up is I have a friend who always brings her own bottled water for her kids whenever they go to anyone else's house. She will not let them drink tap water ever. I think she'd have a coronary if she ever saw them drinking from a hose. Her kids are running around with bottles of water while mine is sticking her face in the sprinkler to get a drink!

So was ours growing up on the farm...well water, ice cold and yummy, until a couple of years ago when they found all sorts of nitrates and pesticides in it. :( My grandparents water was so rusty, you had to let it set for a couple of minutes to settle before the glass was clear!

Dasani for me...thanks

Eh, just as long as theres wet bar within walking distance, the bar you're referring to doesn't hurt as much.
