I saw journey when the voice was there 3 times. OMG!!!! They gave everything they had.I have never really wanted to see a tribute band.Well that is till Jeremey & Frontiers.I have heard so many great things about them over the last few years.And it looks as if they will be close by me.So i really want to see them.

I've seen the Chicago version of Infinity a couple of times. They play music by other artists as well, so they're not strictly a Journey tribute. The attraction for me is to go out and have fun with friends and sing along to songs that I love, performed by people who can do them justice.

i'm not into the truibute band thing. maybe a covers band of a specific era, but the whole tribute isn't for me, especially while the band being paid tribute is still active. i cetainly don't begrudge those who dig it.

I wouldn't mind checking out "Lights" on one of my Cali trips. I've seen a couple clips and heard from friends that they are pretty good.

I'm with you on this. As well as our jazzy duo I'm in a covers band. We do mainly 80's stuff which was popular in the UK - Eurythmics, M People, Alison Moyet, Dead Or Alive, Yazz etc - but we don't dress like them, try to look like them or sound like them. We put our interpretation on their songs.
I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to look or sound like someone else.

But as you say, no prob with those who go that route.
As long as the music and singing is good.

Seriously, a good tribute band will make you feel as if you were going to see the real thing. Frontiers, in my humble opinion, is the closest thing you'll get to seeing Journey. Jeremey's vocals are awesome and the music is good!

I love tribute bands!
Especially since it's so hard to get tickets to see my favorite bands and when/if you do chances are you'll be stuck in the nose-bleeds because good seats are so expensive you have to sell a kidney on the black market to be in the first 40 rows. *sigh*
Not that I'm bitter or anything.

I just think it's fun to get out on the dance floor (which you wouldn't find at a real concert) and enjoy the music you love alongside your fellow fans.
How else am I ever going to get to have a live Led Zeppelin or Beatles experience?

When it comes to tribute bands noone compares to Jeremey and Frontiers. Best you'll hear.

Greg Kihn is having his annual "Kihncert on the Green" with Starship (with Mickey Thomas) , Night Ranger and a Journey tribute band called "Evolution" - I've heard them on the radio but never seen them. They won a local tribute band contest put on by KFOX (Last Band Standing Contest - Tribute).

It's July 6th - I should go. It's in a park in San Jose and the tickets are like ten bucks.

I'd still like to see Jeremey and Hugo. I live on the wrong coast......

Tribute bands are bizarre to me. A covers band is cool because they're mixing it up and you can hear a different interpretation of the original songs, but to flat out plagerize someones whole music catalogue is too strange for me to want to go and see. The tribute shows done for the Beatles are cool, almost like theater the way they change the instruments and clothing to match the time period of the music they're copying and in esssence present a historical recap of the band. When it comes to straight up tribute bands however, the only memorex version I want is from the original band itself, provided they're still around in some form or another. If the tribute band can make it fun, dress up, tell the history of the band, anything to differentiate themselves from the original then I could feel interested but all things considered I would rather give my money to the people who did the actual work writing the lyrics and creating the music.

No one comes close to hugo's talent out on the mimic band circuit, that guy has got so much talent. He could have given journey some competion if he came out 10 years earlier than he did, hands down that guy can sing ,write an play instruments hes the "real deal". His new cd is going to be pure melodic bliss.

As I've said before, to each his own. . . But just to be clear, your use of the word "plagerize" is inaccurate and wrong. To plagerize someone's material is to copy it and pass it off as your own. Performing music that other people wrote is a long tradition upheld by Elvis, Led Zeppelin, U2, The Beatles, etc etc ad infinitum. I'm always amazed that some look down on people performing cover songs and yet find me an actor who writes his own lines or a broadway performer who sings their own libretto.

Anyway...

Tribute/covers bands are an optional way (You don't have to fucking go so I don't see what all the jealousy/bitching is about!!!) to enjoy the concert experience at a more affordable price and many times much closer to home. Paying proper homage to musical influences is the ultimate sign of respect and I have zero problem with it. It only perpetuates the music and exposes it to more people...sometimes just the "average Joe" that stumbles into a bar becomes a fan of the music. It's a win/win situation for everyone. Infinity in Chicago, Frontiers in Virginia, and Lights out of California are all excellent at what they do.

Of course you are right, Plagerize isn't the right word to use so I stand rebuked but I think copy fits pretty accurately into what I am saying. I don't have to go see tribute bands of course and I won't if I can see the original artist perform. If the original group or person is defunct then it makes for a different situation as this is the only way to see a full concert live. I have nothing against people doing it for enjoyment or as a career either. If People enjoy watching it , then it's all good.
