i've heard all the stories how perry is able to sit at home counting his royalties coming in but i've always wondered something.if steve is so well off why aren't the other three members who have been in the band for decades also able to do this instead of having to slave to the grind touring year after year.i read somewhere in the herbert interview that steve made them sign something and that changed things drastic to perry's favor and i wonder what year this happened and what exactly did the band members sign over or agree to that changed things so much? is this the main reason or are there other factors to as to why its this way.

Ross has never written a song for Journey so he doesn't get a slice of the publishing income. But Schon and Cain? Their income must be much the same as Perry's given that they co-wrote the hits with him....so if they have to flog themselves around America touring to pay the bills then it's more to do with how they've spent the money rather than - as you seem to imply - Perry somehow stealing their share.

Also...maybe it doesn't seem like a 'slave to the grind' for them? Neil in particular rarely looks like he feels it's a chore being on the road...

You're right with that. Neal basically grew up on stage.
From what I remember he said once that he'd go crazy if he wouldn't be on the road,lol...So I guess he's happy to tour as much as possible.

I don't think Neal and Jon are "slaves to the grind". It was their option to keep Journey and continue touring.
As for the royalties, those can be counted anywhere. It doesn't matter if the band members are retired or active.
Even if Journey would not exist anymore, Steve, Neal and Jon will count their royalties another 45 years from now.
When they'll be done on Earth, the royalties will get to their family members.

This may not be accurate, but I read that Mr. Perry no longer gets a chunk of the concert proceeds...that agreement expired this year. He still of course receives royalties from the songs that he co-wrote. The fact that Journey was allowed to re-record some classsic studio tracks with Arnel, is probably a good indication that Perry's (silent partner) ties to the current Journey are over.

I like most of the songs Larry just listed with Valory writing credits.

He also co-wrote "In the Morning Day," "In My Lonely Feeling/Conversations," "Nickel and Dime," and "People and Places."

Some VERY good, even great, material right there.

Not to mention the smash hit singles "The Rape," "A Few Coins," and "Festival Dance."

Seriously though, get Ross writing again... other than the epic fail that was "Can Do," the rest ain't bad at all.

Simply put, Perry doesn't want to tour, and the others do. Happens all the time. I got tired of playing in my last bar band before the other members did. Some of them are still out gigging every weekend. I lost the desire because it became too much like work. Everyone has a different way of looking at it.

Thats what they make beer for.Do what I do,pack up a six pack, throw you shit in the car,head to nearest honky tonk and play some music. I dont think Perry could tour and do the dirty dozen.

He certainly doesn't get paid an equal share like he was. Hence the new record he's working on. The boy's gonna have to produce come income to replace what he doesn't get from Journey any longer. I'm not sure but I want to say that he gets a writing credit paid still each time a song if his is sang on the road. If that's the case, I doubt it's much.

He'd also get performance and songwriting royalties whenever an album he was featured on sells as part of the catalog or is played on the radio.

Neal just said recently in an interview that he could've retired a long time ago on his income (he is partner with HH in Nocturne), but he would go crazy not performing. Some musicians are born for the road...we know someone who has been a bandleader for 40 yrs and when he isn't out traveling & on stage he is really antsy. Likewise, some just don't like the road.

Look at Johnny Mathis, the guy is worth close to a billion dollars, owns Howard Hughes Old crib here in L.A. and still goes out there and performs. Usually when you see an artist on Public Broadcast Television, it's because they are an Icon, not because they're hard up for cash. I would like to see Steve do a soundstage performance, most viewers are his generation anyway. It's a safe testing ground to see if he's got anything left in the tank, and it wouldn't be be about the money obviously since it is PBS.

Me too, but I think we would all be closer to hearing something new from him if he were. I wouldn't wish that on anyone though.
