The back & forth between them is some of my favorite Journey. Musically probably their best moments.

Well-played.

Four of my favorite Journey songs:
- Feeling That Way
- Anytime
- Just The Same Way
- Someday Soon

Wish we would have had more of it.

Here's a recent live performance with Gregg Rolie and Kevin Chalfant doing "Just The Same Way," just like they used to do live in their days with The Storm:

Gregg Rolie is the TRUTH.

1975-1980 contained quite a few wonderful rock moments at the fingers and microphone of Ole Gregg.

Great stuff! Someday Soon and Just The Same Way are definitely my favorites when it comes to Rollie/Perry vocals.

Perry's vocals on Someday Soon......at around 1:12......when he comes in with "all we do is tryyyyyyy" sound almost angelic, contrasting with Rollie's. Great vocals together. :)

I think if Rolie would have stayed on board Journey would have kept a dynamic much closer to Toto's. Two lead singers and great varied songwriting. I also think Perry would have stayed on if Rolie were there... more songs would have been written with shared vocals and it would have saved Perry's voice and also given him a cushion in performing and from scrutiny in his later years as his voice "matured" into the deeper, raspier range he assumed. Rolie/Perry era of Journey = the best era for me.

So good... Great meat n potatoes rock n roll as far as I'm concerned. No fancy synths or processed guitars, just great crunch, driving piano, drumming, groove, and excellent vocals from both men.

Darn it Rick, tell me how you get dvd stuff up on youtube?! I have an old version of Just The Same Way they did on a German show, that I don't see on youtube. Would love to share it. I do have Nero? Do you have to crop it out of the dvd or shrink it or what???? Got a ton of stuff I could share....... PM me, if it's not too complicated. :D

I would have to agree.

That video is from one of Rolie's last shows before he punched out.

Great clip, ShootemUp!

That's one their best for sure. Greg "mutton chop" Rolie sounding excellent.

Love Schon's over a minute outro and the Perry/Schon "duet" at the end.

Dude, that's a good analysis. I agree with what you're saying. The Rolie Perry era ROCKED!

But just think, if Rolie was still around we wouldn't have Princess Friga today.

Thanks man. I really think we could have had a Perry with longevity this way too. Plus, if his voice couldn't handle some of the tweeter-frying songs anymore, then all they had to do was just stick in another duet or Rolie-driven song to replace it in the live set. Oh well.

Jonathan Cain's birth name is Jonathan Friga.

People who aren't big fans of Cain are the main ones who call him that, it seems.

Good analysis...except that Perry and Rolie didn't like each other...and Perry was too extraordinary a singer to ever fit into a Toto-style rotation system for long. Toto were more of a collective of session guys and I always thought they lacked the personality and grandeur of Journey partly for this reason....

None of the band wanted SP. "They wanted to be successful without a new lead singer."

It's one thing to tour and perform going on 10+ years with a bunch of guys you like but if it becomes a struggle which it did, there wasn't any joy in it anymore for him. It was going to change one way or another.

I wouldn't mind Rolie singing with them again before they close up shop.

"I never really felt like part of the band." Kinda makes sense when you look at it from that perspective.

Still reeks of self-pity and malcontent. :P
If he felt like that, he chose to. I think.

Rolie for President in 08'

Then...he can hire Friga as an intern and shove a cigar up his ass.

Perry....ugh...

Love the voice...Love the talent...Love the songwriting....THE voice of classic Journey.

BUT...fuck him... I hope to never see him grace the stage with Journey again. stay home and pet your cats.

The Rolie/Perry thing could have worked....Goof for Rolie to throw his middle finger in Perry's face and walk away when he did.

In comes Friga...Open Arms .... Thanks for turning a waltz into a rock song......

But hey...Escape and Frontiers are great......ROR...well...um....

The Rolie era will always be my favorite era....

Make a Rolie era GH cd for yourself....Journey was a ROCK band ......

I'll shut up....I could go on and on....

Rolie friggin kicks ass.

Sony really needs to release the Osaka Departure Show on DVD. I have the boot but I'll pay 80 bucks for an import version if it comes out. I have the official DVD of the Carpenters live in Japan 1974 and it's worth every penny over the bootleg copy.
