Yep. He's sounding good. Hope it keeps up. I must admit Arnel is the deal.

Quite a few here were predicting/praying his voice would cave
before Journey could start touring on U.S. soil.

Yeah I am SICK AND TIRED of hearing the Perry bullshit replayed for the 1000th time. This man has earned his stripes for HIS voice. And frankly Perry at his current age voice could not hold a candle to Arnel!
THIS GUY IS THE REAL DEAL!

Perry bullshit? Are you kidding me? That's got to be without a doubt the funniest thing I've ever read here. If not for this "Perry bullshit", there would be no Journey to be discussing now, and "the real deal" would still be singing in a lounge somewhere in the Pacific. Get a grip, dude.

The "Perry bullshit" that I refer to, and maybe you could have inquired instead of ASSuming, is about a man who has had NOTHING to do with this band since 98', and yet people constantly bring him up in almost every context of Journey. You are one of those who seems to think that Journey would have never existed without Perry. Perry was not THE BAND. He was a part of the band. Journey existed before him and now with Arnel, exists after Perry. YOU are the one who needs to get a grip dude.

They existed before Perry, barely. Perry made them successful. Perry made those songs great. Arnel wouldn't have anything to sing if it weren't for Perry. He's not, and never will be better than Perry at any age. To come here and say he is, is just asking for trouble.

And if it weren't for Herbie believing in Perry, Perry would be standing next to Richrath sharing a bottle of Wild Irish Rose singing Sam Cooke songs while Richrath played air guitar.

I say it again- Perry could not hold a candle to Arnel, at PERRY's current age. Ask for trouble? Don't care in the least. I know all these "Perry is God" nutcases have been around forever. How about Journey without Schon? OH sorry, Perry must have created the Journey sound too! GET REAL.

If Perry walked up to Schon and said I want back in, Arnel would be on the next plane to Quezon City. You can bet your ass on that. Us nutcases will be around here long after you're gone.

Is this Corey from the "official" Journey Backtalk forums?. Still angry and trashing Perry I see. Don't listen to this one folks, this one is the biggest loon out of them all, and he's not even a Steve Perry fan. Go fugure...

And, if it weren't for both of them, and Neal Schon, and Gregg Rolie, and Ross Valory, and Jonathan Cain, and Steve Augeri, Arnel would still begging for food on the streets.
So, it's a losing battle to start going down this road, comparing Arnel and the current version of Journey to the past. Arnel owes a lot more to a lot more people then Steve Perry does.

I wonder why that is??? Could it be that the contribution Steve Perry made to the 'legacy' of Journey can never be separated from anything the band does? I sure think so. And obviously, looking at the replies since mine, I'm not the only one.
As good a singer as Arnel is, until he has a proven track record longer than a few months (it took SA 9 years and he still never measured up), he will never be 'the real deal' enough to be comparable to Steve Perry. Bullshit or not, that's the way it is. IMHO, of course.

Just to clarify: I only posted this because I feel most of us had/have some concern (and even Shirley did) about his..or anyone's....voice holding up under the rigors of touring with this catalog. I just mean to say...So far so good.

AP does still sound strong there...hope he continues too, I plan on seeing them in the Fall. And, it is useless to argue anything regarding Steve Perry...the fact is that SP is the one who made the mark on the world and no one, however good, is going to take that away. As much as AP is doing a great job, unfortunately for him he will not achieve what SP has. But, then again, AP might be very happy to just be getting paid to sing for a living. It's just plainly obvious that people out there (in the general public) want 'the voice' they associate with Journey & AP is the closest.

Including the band themselves.
Or did you not notice that Arnel's Perry similarities were played up as equally, if not moreso, as the run-up to the failed Steve Augeri experiment?

Yeah and that would sure give them that legacy sound they are after.. Tuned down 3 steps at least. There is no way Perry can sing those tunes anymore if in 94 he couldnt do it a half step down.. The dream is over so wake up. Its another day now and the sun has set on Perry. Maybe a solo album but I doubt it. Hey, maybe helium might help him.. I love the guys voice but still think he ruined Journey when he fired Ross and Smitty. That was fracturing the stone as far as I am concerned. The entire ROR tour sucked balls for the old material. Everything played WAY to fast and the feel that was so important in the groove was gone because NO ONE plays like Smitty.
If he was "toast" then take a break. He says he was toast in 86/87 and then record Against the wall right after.. Neat how that never gets mentioned when that time period and him being "toast" are mentioned in the same interview. He was toast alright.. Toast for singing Journey songs but not his own material... Sorry all I see from Perry is lies and self interest above that of his peers best interest..
I think Perry was loosing it and knew he couldnt sing the old material well enough to suit himself as early as 84. Street talk was an attempt to leave Journey and sing in a way that fit his voice at the time. Night after night of the dirty dozen will shred anyone. Arnel will probably need some rest before long. I have a gift for reading and detecting bullshit and IMHO Perry is full of bullshit. Neal said fuck him in that last interview and I agree fuck him and his voice... He gave us great music and then gave us the run around. He doesnt owe us anything accept maybe the truth. After all it isnt really Perry that made them big (he helped). It was right music at the right time promoted by incredible management and us buying the albums and going to see them live. He forgets that I think. Yes the band wrote the material and SP sang on it but with out HH and the fans forking over money they would have went no where. There are plenty of songs written in this world that are truly great and never see the light of day.. Something to think about. It took a team to make it all happen. Not just the band.
As far as I am concerned he can stay at home and play in his 12x12 foot gold plated litter box and never sing another Journey tune live again.. Arnel sounds awesome and fired up the band. Thats the best we could have hoped for. Believe me when I say this, you dont want Perry back if you want the material to sound right. Now him and Schon writing together for a side project.. That would be great !!!

I dont think they would... They live on the old material and he cant do it... Yes it would make money AND ruin the legacy. COuld you imagine seeing them with Perry only to have the songs sound all weird in different keys ? They dont want to do that and I for one dont want to hear it. If anything Arnel on vox and Perry/Schon/Cain writing the material.. We want soring vocals when we hear JOurney and we expect that as a given. Perry is done soaring IMO. Shit, pushing 60 !! Come man... Its over.

By most accounts, Perry couldn't cut it around the time of TBF.
That did little to deter the band from dropping everything (inlcuding a recently reformed Rolie-Journey lineup) and going with him.
Neal's even recently admitted he's reached out to Perry, and it was revealed (on this very forum, I think) that overtures were made to get Perry to sing with the band at some awards show last year.
No matter what heights the band achieves with Arnel, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the surge of publicity and $$$ that would follow a Perry reunion.
You talk as if artistic integrity somehow factors into the equation here. It doesn't.

Hehe, yes integrity... Forgot that it not a given in this situation. As much as we would all love to see Perry on stage with Journey again I am not so sure we would want to hear him !! I would love to be wrong about his voice and that maybe he had nodes that have been removed or something and that he could at least sing as well as he did late ROR. Doubt it though..

I heard a very tired and somewhat worn out voice during the We Are The World sessions. He came around nicely for the first half of the ROR tour, though. Must have been that

I don't think Mr Pineda sounds anything like Steve Perry. He's very, very good. But Perry had a low end too, and AP doesn't. He's all high end. Just how I hear it and maybe you all listen differently, which I would understand.
