I don't understand, Is this a tribute to Journey? Why a complete album of Journey songs only? Was this supposed to be an audition cd?

Fly2Freedom is a cover cd of Journey tracks.

I like the Two Fires album much better. Some great original tracks. Kevin and Josh Ramos are awesome here.

Man, I'm sorry, but how anyone can listen to "Fly2Freedom" and then the GH re-records and still have that opinion is beyond me. Your support of Chalfant for the job always is bolstered by mention of Herbie Herbert's "personal pick" for Perry's replacement, but you do realize that the replacement Herbie was talking about was circa 1985, right?

Just my view, but Chalfant isn't half bad, but he seems he's out of breath most of the time. I doubt he'll be able to handle the power needed to keep up.

He actually sounds better singing the Gregg Rolie Bits, but any material after Captured he just doesn't bring it. Jeremy and Arnel are obviously the best choice for The Escape and beyond material. When I listen to the vocals on the rerecords or here the audio on Jeremy's clips, him and Arnel have such strong high vocals compared to this guy it's like a collegiate against the pro's. Maybe he had more of a high range in the early eighties but there is nothing here to prove it and to me at least Journey music has always been about the tenor sound.

huh? I used to think that as well until I heard "Fly2Freedom". Sorry, maybe 15-20 years ago, not now.

Like Augeri before him on Vegas 2001, Fly2Freedom showcases a soaring tenor covering the classics while relating them in his own way. The similarities to Perry are natural.

And while Herbie did concede in Andrew’s interview that Chalfant’s creeping age may be a factor, he also said this on the topic of Kevin replacing Soto:

“Kevin Chalfant would have been a much better choice at that point. Kevin Chalfant would be a much better point now.”

The stuff Chalfant had on the first Two fires cd were songs he was writing with Journey back when they were looking at him as a potential lead(i remember an interview with him saying those songs were written with journey) Thats a great cd,but obviously when he wrote on his own (the 2nd cd was the result), which was hit and miss....mostly miss.Its obvious he had chemistry writing with the band and it was original, not rehashed stuff from the early 80's.

His voice is plenty high and he hits the notes with ease - arguably much moreso than Jeff or Jeremey, who I both thought were great additions to the band.

Better still, while a strong tenor, Kevin doesn't have any of that Perry/Arnel shrill oil squeak quality,

He still hits the clean highs.
Besides, i'm looking at the overall contribution, not only the voice.
Jeremey, you once claimed that Neal and Jon "made a go of it with Augeri despite any lack of chemistry" - which I couldn't agree with more.
So why risk going down that path again with another unproven creative entity like Arnel?
He may be entering his sunset years, but Chalfant's melodic creds are not suspect.

Who the f%#k cares that they are tuned down a half step!! The man has one the best voices in Rock IMHO bar none!! He could sing the frickin phone book and sound amazing if you ask me.

I always chuckle at the statement he made about TBF (or was it Arrival?). Something like "I've got better songs in my sock drawer."

He would've been worthy of the lead and we'd have some good albums no doubt. If this had happened back then, maybe Rolie and Smitty would've been back in the band?

Also Chalfant's live version of Survivor's Can't Hold Back (on the Live America album I think) is the best version of that song ever performed, bar none.

Love this cd. "If This Is Love" is the most Journeyesque sounding track in my opinion.

However I do doubt he'd stand up to the Journey catalogue - even though his ICHB is fabulous, it's tuned down a full step from the original recording. If he can't sing Jamison in the original key, something tells me Perry might be an even taller order.

i think somewhere on this forum it was stated that he was contacted before the virginia show last year. it has been alluded to that, they did indeed dangle it again, but took it back. who knows.
