Reverend Jesse Jackson apologized yesterday (July 9th) for making what he called "regretfully crude" comments about Barack Obama, whose presidential candidacy Jackson supports. During a conversation with a fellow guest on Fox & Friends Sunday (July 6th) before a live interview, Jackson was expressing his unhappiness with recent speeches Obama had made in black churches in which he'd spoken about the importance of black men being present and actively participating in their children's lives. In whispered comments, when he said he thought the microphone wasn't on, Jackson said: ["Barack's been talking down to black people on this faith-based... I want to cut his n*** out. Jackson said yesterday that he called Obama's campaign to apologize and that his point about the issue was that there was other important issues in the black community that need to be addressed, including unemployment, the mortgage crisis and the number of blacks in prison. Jackson also publicly apologized in a late-afternoon press conference: ["If in this thing I've said in a hot mike statement that's interpreted as distraction, I offer apology for that, because I don't want harm or hurt to come to this campaign. It represents too much of the dreams of so many who paid such great prices and I'm very sensitive to what that means."]
