I think Hysteria is possibly the greatest example of production ever.......but, the songs still sound like a product of their time whereas most of Escape is timeless. However, correct me if i'm wrong John - but i think you prefer Frontiers to Escape?????

That is a very good point. Escape is timeless

A lot of music really limits itself - across genres - disco is time-stamped and, jmho, I truely feel that rap will go down that same path.

Totally! They still had a bit of a raw edge then, and the songs are better, even now when i hear Photograph or Die Hard The Hunter, i get chills......

Not me. Not only did Hysteria sell more, and have more hits.
I remember looking at my stereo funny some of the stuff that was coming out of it. All I'd heard at the time it was released was "Women" Which I loved. Then "Rocket" rolled out. It was like nothing I'd heard before.
I had to spin the LP a couple times to begin to figure out what I was hearing.
NIG, have you seen the "Ultimate Albums" on Hysteria? They isolate a bunch of stuff. Just layers upon layers of stuff. Cool as hell. Love Pyro too though.

I would say Escape would be my vote (I'm biased).

But some missing from that list for me that aren't necessarily my favorites personally, but which were undoubtedly influential for that time were:

1) Yes - 90125 (first time I ever heard a sample, now sampling is everywhere)
2) Bruce - Born in the USA

Appetite for Destruction is an incredible album. So is Hysteria. But they're both highly derivative of true innovators like AC DC. Half of DL's songs would have never even been written if not for songs like "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Hells Bells," and "Have a Drink on Me." G 'n R is probably closer to an old Stones/Aerosmith vibe, but "Paradise City" is straight from the AC DC curriculum. They are all great records, but I have got to hand it to Back in Black of the three.

Let me also address one other thing: I am personally shocked and offended to see Slippery When Wet even nominated compared to other hard rock classics such as these three albums.

That being said, The Joshua Tree and Born in the USA are seminal albums from two of the biggest bands of all time. They are albums that their respective artists have never been able to match. With the legacy of both U2 and Bruce Springsteen, it is hard for me to put any of the eligible records ahead of them.

Van Halen had better albums than 1984, so it was easy to remove them from my consideration. I love Rush, but I'll take Signals and Grace Under Pressure anyday over Moving Pictures, as legendary as that album was. I just like the late 80's Rush sound better.

So, who did I vote for? This was incredibly hard, but I voted my heart. Journey Escape. While I think the band had an equally strong album with Frontiers, this was the first record I ever fell in love with. As a lifelong Journey fan, I couldn't vote for anything else. If I were being completely objective, I would probably have voted for Back in Black.
