Why did Perry not sing the chorus correctly when he sang this live? Surely he could of easily hit those notes in 1981..?
If Deen can do it then surely Perry could.
I can never enjoy that song live with Perry singing on it

Deen doesn't sing the entire show every show like Perry did, either.

True true.
I'm sure Perry could of still hit it though easily.

During the E5C4P3 tour, but not during Frontiers or ROR.

This like Lay it down are songs that seemed to strain Perry's upper registry. Lay it down got dropped from the Escape tour pretty quickly and I don't think it ever made it to America live or if it did it showed up sporadically in the song sets. Keep on Running was too popular to drop from the set list but if he sang it like the studio version I think his voice would wear out pretty quick if done on a nightly basis. There was an Interview or semi- bio on Perry's voice in one of the threads which mentioned that he was very concious of which songs to drop from the setlist, not for popularity reasons but how they could be detrimental to his singing voice. Some songs just come off in the Studio better. and this is one of them. They were already speeding up the tempo on half their songs live anyway. I don't think that was only to keep the crowed pumped up with the faster tempo but it shortens the time you have to hold the high notes and completely eliminates some of them.

Probably because he realized the song sucks and didn't want to waste his voice.

Maybe that's because there were far better songs to replace that with.

and it's just preference,,, the Houston live versions of KOR and Open Arms (which is also a little different than the studio version) are two of my favorites, where as the studio versions of either don't do much for me at all...
in fact, I can’t tell you the last time I listened to any studio version of a Journey song, as they were light years better live, imo… but for others, they want everything to sound EXACTLY like the studio versions, with no variations what-so-ever
(which, I think, goes a long way to explain the sp-sound-a-like camp vs the just find a great singer camp thing…)

Agree on all counts! Well except for maybe
Open Arms. I skip over.....even live versions of it now too, just plain tired of that one. That one and
Who's Crying Now.

Lol, me too..
The only part of WCN I play is the last chorus of "Only soooooo many tears you can cry ,,, " on Houston live - just stunning,, but other than that little live bit, that song just does nothing for me,,
and while the Houston version of OA is the only version I like - also stunning - it's still a rarity on my playlist
-- all of which is probably just the opposite for many people here,
lol

There are some old interviews out there when the band says they like to change things up -- make it a new experience for the concert-going crowd. Even DSB (the ending) is different live than the studio recording. On a lot of songs played live, SP ad-libbed, Neal extends his licks.
I don't think it's a conscious decision to "duck" notes, at least not until the later years. Even JoePa, who's not a Perry fan by any imagination, once said he thought the Houston dvd KOR live version was "kick-ass" -- better than recorded. I have to agree. The live versions of some of these songs give it a sense of urgency -- hype -- that the recorded song does not.
