Lefsetz on Journey/Azoff Again

On CHART POSITION -

18. Journey "Revelation"

Sales this week: 23,778
Percentage change: -4%
Cume: 308,777

And that's what it is!

Not the incredible pipes of their Filipino lead singer, but the PRICE!

Irving's the leader on this... He told me if Dave signed off on it, he was going to put out a Van Halen DVD for $7.99!

Maybe I'm talking out of school here, not that Irving said this was off the record, but this is a very important point. PRICE MATTERS! Stop weeping over the death of the CD, the declining margins, and just lower the damn price so music becomes an impulse item. Lower the price enough and it doesn't PAY to steal!

And you wonder why the established acts would rather go with Irving and Wal-Mart than Doug and Universal. Wal-Mart pays, the act gets the lion's share of the money and the customer is HAPPY!

Very interesting and very true.

I'd LOVE a $7.99 Van Halen DVD, I'd snap that up without a second thought.

Is he singing a slightly different tune this go-round?

It's amazing to think of the imbeciles that were making decisions for the last 8 or 9 years (was it 01 or 99 when Napster came?). Why didn't they realize a change had to be made in marketing and pricing? Geez.

What is one of the laws of selling? Have a product worth buying at the right price and people will purchase.

Simple business. Make it, market it, price it.

The price is not the issue to me. So some will pick it up cause it is cheap? Will they be listening to it next month or next year? Will it keep on selling? Interesting stuff

HEY...whatever

So the sales are down by 4% but it goes up one in the charts. Interesting.

I've been saying that for years. To people who aren't serious, hardcore music fans (i.e. most of the world's population), a CD stopped being worth $15 some time ago. Wal-Mart can still eat my ass, but $12 for that package is about right. The profit margin for the asshats in suits might be smaller, but given how much money they made in the 80's and 90's, I don't really feel bad for them.

SG - I have to agree with you on this one. From what I've seen AP is proud to be Filipino, as he should be be. So why does any reference to him being Filipino seem to be a put-down to some? I think incredible pipes says a lot!!!

WTF does this have to do with me? The point I'm trying to make is that if I had a fucking dime for every time someone tried to find the racist angle with respect to arnel around here, I would have enough extra money to buy you the friga-cast dildo that you've been coveting.

It's a pointless issue and doesn't belong in this thread....stop making racial issues out of this. It's not appropriate.

Easy killer, in this regard Filipino is being used as an adjective. Not a slur. C'mon. People talk about my roommate being the "Irish" guy. Do you think that's being insensitive?

I guess I started this, but I wasn't calling the guy racist, just questioning why he chose to draw attention to Arnel's race, as opposed to maybe saying "...the incredible pipes of their New lead singer.", which seems at lot more relevant as to why the CD would be selling well.

I'm chilled...some of the rest of you, not so much...

Bleeding heart, tree hugging, sandal wearing liberal wading in here...

(okay maybe not the sandals, a girl's gotta have good shoes)

The problem is that it's a gratuitous race (or nationality, in this case) marker. People who fit the standard social construction don't get their race/gender/whatever mentioned, and those who depart from the norm are marked by the adjectives. SP would never be the white, male, US singer with incredible pipes because all that is assumed. It's subtle, but it's considered racism, or, more accurately, xenophobia.

Hey Prog, DrFu

I'm Filipino.

Much as I detest even seeming to side with a certain pigfucker, LOL....
I did not detect anything that would raise a single eyebrow hair in the
use of "Filipino" in the newsblurb.

It seemed more akin to adding spice to a dish, with intent to curry
reader-interest. It's just an echo of (or tie-in to) the newsworthiness of
"Journey found a lead singer in the Philippines! Via YouTube!!",
again, to bring da sexy to the present news.

I didn't see anything racist in the original comment or any suggestion that it was racist to those who opposed to it. It appeared to me that despite the compliment the comment could just have easily read 'nothing to do with the quality of the new music' but instead the focus was put on Arnel and some objected.

Give Andrew a break though i'm sure nothing but praise was meant and right about now sleep deprivation is probably kicking in from a much more important new arrival.

By pushing the youtube and poverty angle pretty much purposely to garner publicity, the band has inadvertantly propeled the moniker of filipino singer into the mainstream. He could as easily be known as the youtube guy or the previously homeless guy. Filipino is probably the best word to use as his ethnicity is a great promotional piece to sell to the asian media market.

Great point, and I certainly don't think there is anything derogatory meant by saying he is Filipino. I think some are being too sensitive about this. I think his overall point is that it doesn't matter who the lead singer would have been [Augeri/JSS/Pineda], it's the price of the package that is causing people the buy it.

:D thanks, X...

I'm way used to being ignored...by legions of students.

It's all good...just responding w/ my point of view to Tom's "what's the prob?" I realize people are all over the map on these issues--see them or don't, buy them or are pissed off by them.

Vive la différence!

Yeah, I thought Filipinos are proud when people mention that Journey's singer is one of them? I guess it's only OK when another Filipino says it.
