FROM JOURNEY FORUM:

Sorry Argus, I'm not registered. I also have yet to attend a a Journey concert, which I will on August 12 in Virginia Beach. But I hope you allow this one. Anyway, I'm glad about Arnel's success and Journey's triumphant resurgence. I'm really amazed at the overwhelming reception, not just among Filipinos/Filipino-Americans, (which is expected) but even among the majority of Caucasians, proof of which are the sold-out concerts in Denver, Salt Lake City, and even this early, Iowa and Oklahoma. Very few places can be whiter than those. Though I can't say racism is gone the extreme expressions of it are definitely a small minority. Those who scoff at Arnel's accent are simply racist bigots. If sounding American is an issue, why do people don't care about comedian Craig Ferguson's thick Scottish accent, and of Simon Cowell's typical English one? It's simply because they're white and Arnel isn't. For another, hearing Arnel during interviews his English is actually good, considering it's not his first language and he has very little formal education. He learned it through sheer observation. In the case of grammar I tell you that many Americans are far from perfect either. I've tutored high school students and edited their papers, and guess what, many of them have awful grammar and spelling. And English is their first language! But like what I said, those who make Arnel's English an issue are in the minority and they only manage to expose their own idiocy and bigotry. Finally, what matters is he sings well and is an outstanding live performer while most singers can only do the former.

I'm glad America has accepted Arnel and by doing so helped in eliminating racial and ethnic stereotypes. Such things have no place if we want to enjoy good music. JOURNEY ROCKS!

VirginiaDude

PS Expect recorded songs to be rendered differently in concerts. Some samples. SP himself sometimes would cut short Open Arms , rendering 'arms' with just one note rather than two connected ones, as in the studio version. Paul McCartney in one concert failed to hit some high notes of 'Baby I'm Amazed' (he really ran out of breath). But the critics didn't bother. If singers go flat, it may not sound good, but it happens. If that happens to Arnel, if he looked and sounded tired, I say, so what? It happens to other rock legends too because the high physical energy exerted in rock concerts tends, to exhaust the performers, especially the lead vocalist, no matter if it's at the start or the end of a tour. What matters is the overall impact.

Judging by the grammar in your previous posts and now this one there is no way in hell you should be grading English high school papers.

Race baiting rants like this is what makes Journey distasteful. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the cross section of the Journey fan base is an *ugly* one....Straight down the line from the augeri snipers of the first days of back talk, the JSS assassins that followed, the arnel car bombers and the ever present loons....

The above post didn't seem like a review...it seemed like a racial rant, like Wednesday's Child so perfectly stated. And I dont get where Argus (i.e. CJ) comes into play on this. Was this a repost from the current Journey Pysch board? or is the OP confusing Andrew with CJ? I don't get it.

If you're going to review the album and/or the band, review it on it's own merits. Not whether or not it's worthy, *because* there's an added racial element that you either see or are perceiving. That's racist in itself.

Is it ok to judge someone's math ability on his/her results only or is it apropriate to make allowances and/or add expectations because of race? Is the person that can do complex division in his/her head a smart person if he or she is white? But exceptionally smart because he or she is black? How about the person that makes such a statement that *qualifies* ones worth based on his/her race, instead of just his/her accomplishments? How is that person not a racist, by the reasons/justifications thrown around here or elsewhere.

Judge this fucking album based solely on whether or not it's good music. By trying to qualify it based either in part or solely because the singer happens to be Fillipino, is a bigotted effort in itself.

exactly. we aren't qualified to judge each other anyway. we can say, yea, i dig it, or um, not so much and use it for a coaster. :P and move on. Some of us could harmonically dissect it, if you like, but that proves nothing either. yes or no. period.

oh, and anonymous, I fail to understand how you can review a show that you haven't seen. so forget this discussion and let's have a fair and square hijack.

how do YOU like the cd, frank? I'm digging it. even the ballads. i find it interesting that Revelation is followed by Time 3 in my iTunes playlist, so when i listen, i just let it roll and get the best of today and yesterday! 8)

I initially hated it. As I've already said, I personally find it hard to divide the music from the people making the music...and as a result, I initially hated it. I've now come almost full circle and I cant stop playing it. Even the songs I originally thought were simply awful, like Wildest Dreams, I am enjoying thoroughly.

I posted this on my own site...I'm eating some serious crow with regards to this CD. I panned the fuck out of the band and the efforts....but I now love it.

Go figure....

I'm man enough to admit I was wrong about this album...

me 2.

let me qualify that a tad by saying that i don't like this kind of music. pop-py. and that has always been my position. BUT, for the genre that it is and the style, mood, etc, it is excellent. And Arnel really has a fabulous voice, perfectly suited for it. The songs are well written, and carry out the mission just fine.

however, i'm just in it for the shredding. 8) And there is some of that, too. (but not enough! :x )

If the person that wrote this statement reads this, eat shit.

First, let me say, I think Arnel is fantastic, and don't care where he hails from, but just because someone has a problem with is accent does not make him/her bigotted or a racist. Just because I don't like liver doesn't make me a meat hater. We just prefer what we prefer.

Actually, I think Augeri had an accent, and at times it bugged me, but overall, he was great in Journey. The only problem I have with Arnels accent is Journey. Some of his recordings should have been done just one more time, to get some mispronounciations(sp) corrected.

I don't think he speaks English very well either, but that's totally understandable. He's been thrown into a whole new culture that speaks a totally different language, and for the time he's had, he's done a tremendous job. That had to be no small undertaking. Huge kudos are deserved.

There seems to be a lot of confusion in there because they just post opinions without challenging each other.
I got kicked out there a while ago because I tried to put some sense into those people.
You should visit that tread in the general forums under the topic "Steve Perry"

I got that, right off and on first read.
Not my point though, which was twofold:

1. You, and not this Virginia Dude (whoever the fuck he is) misrepresented it here as an "anonymous review"
2. Virginia Dude's post is a load of racist bullshit that shouldn't be reposted here in the first place.

wech.
