When "Live" Was Live...What's with Valory's Hair??

It looks like Valory is in a hair growing contest with Perry in this footage. On another note, am I the only one who thinks these old live performances blow away ANYTHING by ANYONE these days????? This isn't even close to one of my favorite Journey tracks, but these guys were just soooooo tight, live, and the wacky shit Perry does with his voice is just nuts

I don't know, Larry. Maybe not. It sounded too damn near perfect to be live. That said, it sure feels live. Also, I don't know ANYONE who has ever accused Journey of lip-syncing with Perry at the helm. I just can't imagine Perry lipping.

Yep! Almost all of the "Live" shows back then were lipped. Just like fashion, music and everything else...Lipping is making a comeback!

 Stu.

I found that weird with the Midnight Special performances a year a part. :?

'78 This one obviously isn't lipped. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yCGz7Khpms Some of his most stunning vocals IMO.

'79 Yet this one was. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry4JDkpmZAU

I listened to them...I must now purge my ears with Barry Manilow music, and burn a copy of Air Supplies greatest hits for my car ride into work tomorrow morning...Oh the Humanity!!! Say it isn't so...Steve Perry lipsynched??? I must now go start a blog about it! (Sorry Deano this one is MINE!)

It was cool for the guys to have long hair in the day. I love the concert footage. Lipsync or no. I am so glad to just peruse you tube and see alot of things that I would not be able to otherwise. It is like going back in time, and remembering some of the best times of your life. Or in my case getting a fleeting glimpse of concerts I would have never been able to attend.

Lipsyncing is hard! I would rather just sing myself than to follow a track! Milli Vanilli thought they had a monopoly on that technique :D

Now that you mention that, I remember "Solid Gold", back in the early 80's. EVERY artist who went on that show lipped, and it was AWFUL lipping! Their damn lips NEVER matched the lyrics. If that performance was lipping, it was pretty damn good! Most guys never seem to keep their lips in sync with the actual recording!

What Tracie said. :) Actually, all those shows, like American Bandstand, were lip synched...never really understood that, esp. for the instruments - did Steve Smith just pretend to hit the drums?

I want to know what preservitives Steve takes because he ages so well. Geez, I am 13 years younger than he is and I want to know how he keeps looking younger than me! My husband has dark hair and it is graying, he looks better with the gray. I use Loreal because my hair is dark blonde and going platinum. Darn it why do men age better! This sucks!

Now THIS one is live!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ7mEff3 ... re=related

From the MIDNIGHT SPECIAL- this was the first time I ever saw Journey on TV. That's about all it took for me! Dig Perry's high note at 2:23

btw- Most of the acts on MIDNIGHT SPECIAL did play live- this was one of the many cool things about the show. I learned more about Rock and Roll watching these old shows (like this and Don K's Rock Concert) than I did in 20 years of MTV.

How cool! I've never seen this clip before. I would have killed to be in that audience. Steve makes lipping look so natural and convincing. That's the way they did those kinds of TV shows back in the day. They weren't trying to fool anyone, it's just the way it was done.

Thanks for posting!

Yeah, loved watching those shows...and, trying to stay awake. Back in the olden days when there were only 3 channels, that is, if you had tin foil on your rabbit ear attenae!

I think that is totaly amazing, and I am not kidding it is hard to sing with a track! I guess that guaranteed the place that hosted these bands would have a good performance even if they had zip tallent. I know for a fact they sounded good from the two concerts I was able to attend. Thanks for that historical tidbit! :D

Another one who could make lip syncing look natural was Karen Carpenter, though her brother would tend to muck things up once in a while.

Karen sounded the same live as she did on the records, Watching her perform the song "sing" (in Japanese instead of English) with school children is just too cool.

I bought the import dvd of that concert. I had to burn it to make it region free but I would rather watch the backup disc anyway rather then accidentally damage the original as it was a little bit of an expensive purchase.

CD Japan. It's out of print but they'll probably dig some more up.
