Just ordered chinese...bill came to 14.60. Gave the driver a twenty. Too much?

What do you base a tip on?

I cxnsider distance, resturant and my need not to go out  So that's a good tip you gave him or her and the driver will remember you next time which equals good service.

I think I tend to over-tip every now and again....Mostly because I can't wait for the driver to make change....I just yank the bag, and throw the twenty.

Way too much. I would personally go no higher than 10 or at a push 20%.

As a former waitress, bartender, and hotel van driver, I can tell you that kind people and generous tippers really are remembered and appreciated. A lot of people don't tip at all, and lots of folks are just nasty and upleasant to deal with. Pizza guy/gal is out there working for a living, and every little bit helps; I don't think you overdid it on the tip.

Do you grunt when you grab the food?.......you men.
Yes I think that tip was overly generous but better to be that way instead of stingy.

This is touching on something that bothers me. Should good service be based on tip size?

I tip to get EXCEPTIONAL service....why should someone get an exorbinant amount for just doing his/her job?

If I deliver someone's mail really fast, I don't get a tip. Just saying....

food delivery is different from delivering mail. This should not bother you. Delivery drivers work for tips and if you over tip them they remember for next time. If you worry about tipping delivery food drivers you need to just pick up your food yourself.

It shouldn't be but I would guess more times than not, it is.

Generally, I tip a minimum of 10%, maximum of 50%.
If they're surly (and quite a few are) I pay only the bill and tell them to fuck off.

I always tip at least 15% but if I get very good service I will tip more. I don't think you can be faulted for tipping too much, only not enough.

That works if you only order once from each place. I'd be wary of future orders.

10 to 20% should be fine. I've never had a bad experience with a delivery person unlike some people. Worse place for tips is Beverly Hills. Everything is paid in plastic or put on a tab, no one seems to have small change available for tips.

Damn. A 37% tip? Where do you live, StM? I'll come deliver food to you.

I always consider the fact that most places give the driver's the delivery charge also.
Or at least part of it. Depends on the place, I suppose. And also the service.

I tip around 15-20% every time, more if it was great service!

The tip is not the issue, the $14.60 take-out order is. I assume the driver had additional runs in the vicinity. Take in consideration the cost of fuel.

My Mom was a waitress for years, so I appreciate how important tips are. Plus people do remember you if you tip well.

Heres a tip ,get a job where you dont have to rely on tips

I would have to say 75 % of all delivery places forget something, or screw up your order, and you dont find out until there gone.(my personal experience ) i think thats why a lot of people are not tiping nowadays, that plus places are charging extra for delivery.

The opening of Reservoir Dogs has an interesting discussion on tipping.

I go to a lot of restaurants in Koreatown and other Asian areas, and they love white people because white people usually tip no matter what, so they know they can treat them crappily. I don't usually tip much at those places, then.

Haven't had the experience of places charging extra for deliver; however, we don't order in very often, just when the grandkids are here and want pizza.

But I'll tell ya, about 1/4 of those deliveries have been wrong, and like you said, the delivery person has already gone by the time you realize it. One time we called back and had them correct the delivery..felt bad about not tipping that time but, hey, shit happens.

My co worker and I went to a china buffett one day for lunch. A male seated us and brought us our drinks and we went through the buffett twice before our extra dishes were removed from our table and we never were asked if we wanted a refill of our drinks. At the end of our meal, a young lady who we had only seen once during our meal brought us our bill and stood there and ASKED for a tip. Literally, asked for one. At a buffett. Unbelievable.

I called the resturant later in the day and expressed to the manager how inappropriate I thought it was. Apparently, she had just started and he said, "she no be here next time you come". I stressed how it wasn't my intention in any way to get her fired, I just wanted her to know it was not at all appropriate to ASK for a tip! I don't know wether she is still working there or not, I've only been back once since then.
