Cover versions that better the originals...

Postby finalfight » Mon Aug 04, 2008 8:21 pm

Is there such a thing as a cover version that betters the original or at least improves on it in some way?

To start us off I believe the following version of Ozzy's Mr. Crowley by Tim Owens and Yngwie Malmsteem from an Ozzy tribute CD beats the original hands down. Vocally its leagues above the original's limited range and the music has more crunch, sounding fresher as a result.

and the original...

I like the live Ozzy version with Rhoads the best. The Malmsteen/Owens version is pretty good as well.

I think the Goo Goo Dolls version of "Give a Little Bit" is much better than Supertramps!

Spot on! Any Ozzy track live, with RR is brilliant - man was just a cool dude on guitar - like it was part of him....

That version would be great if it wasn't for Ozzy stinking it up. That guy is hitting notes that are so off key they haven't even been named yet. Musically its the best though for sure.

Pretty much agree with you on all counts. Rhoads is my favorite guitarist ever so I tend to listen over Ozzy's warbling vocals.

The First Cut is The Deepest is one that fits this category.

Here's the original that is complete shite from Crap Stevens:

Here's Rod Stewart's cover that kicks ass!:

I love Sammy, but I prefer Rick Springfield's version of "I've Done Everything for You".

Elton Johns version of Lucy in the sky was better than the Beattles.

With the exception of "Spirits in the Night" Manfred Mann's covers of Bruce Springsteen's, "Blinded By The Light" and "For You" are much better...of course, in MY opinion, that wouldn't take much! lol!

Blasphemy. The same can be said about "Helter Skelter." Vince Neil doesn't qualify as a pimple on McCartney's hiney.

This is not my opinion. I can prove this using a pen and scratch paper, and I'll show my work (<~ Bill Hicks)

I enjoy "Disturbed"'s version of "Land of Confusion" more than the Genesis version.

Also, Jeffrey Gaines' version of "In Your Eyes" stands up to Peter Gabriel's version.

You're out of your fucking tree. Beat It, the original, is a classic and has EVH in it.

The band Nonpoint did a strong cover of "In the Air Tonight." I won't say it's better than the original, but they did a nice job of adding their own spin to it.

And Fall Out Boy features John Mayer on guitar. Now where else do you hear John Mayer doing something like THAT????
But I totally understand how you have a greater attraction to Michael Jackson.....not that there's anything wrong with that!
