SPRINGFIELD | Gov hopes to raise millions to fight crime by putting cameras on interstates

August 7, 2008

BY FRANK MAIN Crime Reporter/fmain@suntimes.com

To make good on his offer to help Chicago combat violence, Gov. Blagojevich envisions putting speed cameras on interstates across Illinois -- and using the revenue to form an "elite tactical team" that would operate in Chicago and other cities.

The idea is in its infancy, with no budget and no timetable.

But the governor also is providing Chicago with immediate assistance, said Lucio Guerrero, a spokesman for the governor.

About 50 Illinois State Police employees have been assigned to work with Chicago Police on everything from tracking down illegal gun buyers to hunting for criminals on Chicago's expressways, Guerrero said.

"I want to be judged not by the number of people we provide, but by the results we provide by the end of the year," State Police Director Larry Trent said.

The help comes a month after the governor offered to lend state troopers to fight what he labeled "out-of-control" crime. Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis welcomed the help, but insisted crime in the city remains at decades-low levels.

According to Trent, new State Police teams will stop motorists for traffic violations on Chicago expressways near high-crime areas. The troopers will also look for gun and drug violations. They can communicate with Chicago Police officers on radios and come to their aid when needed.

State Police special agents have been assigned to the Chicago Police Anti-Gun Enforcement Unit and will focus on guns used in teen violence. And troopers will be assigned to special events in the city such as the Taste of Chicago.

The State Police will provide planes to the Chicago Police for surveillance. And a new State Police unit will track gangs across the state, Trent said.

Chicago Police spokeswoman Monique Bond applauded the assignment of State Police agents to the gun team. "They can help us follow up on some of our investigations into illegal gun purchases," Bond said.

In the long term, the governor is considering installing speed cameras in each direction of every interstate in the 20 State Police districts across Illinois to raise $50 million a year in revenue -- enough for 500 more troopers. The money could support an "elite tactical team" and bolster everything from crash investigations to cold-case murder probes, Trent said.

Currently, camera-equipped vans nab speeders in construction zones, but state law does not allow speed cameras on interstates, Trent said.

In Arizona, 50 speed cameras will be deployed on highways by September with another 50 by January at a cost of about $20 million. The state hopes to raise $90 million a year by imposing $165 fines on vehicles going 10 mph over the speed limit or faster.

Asked what speeds Illinois motorists would have to hit before they would get nailed with a camera violation, Guerrero said, "It would have to be egregious -- 80 or 85 mph. We don't know yet."

Also in the article it stated, "the revenue generated could add another 500 state troopers," why? That's one (but down the list) argument I have. If you have all these cameras monitoring all of this traffic, why do you need MORE cops. Shouldn't this free up police (Revenuers) work since a vast majority of their time is writing tickets? If anything, the increase in cameras should result in a cut in the number of officers.

That whole article smells like horseshit. And cameras tripping you at 80mph? Have they even been on a toll or expressway recently... except for rush that's the flow of traffic!! Yeah, let me gramma my ass down to 65 while 200 other cars run me the hell over.

10 maybe even 5 years ago I would've probably agreed but with as many scumbags as there are running around, I'm for whatever it takes to catch them. I can live with a little less privacy to help catch killers, rapists and general low life criminals.

Speeders I don't really care about though.

Don't all post offices have cameras on their lots? They caught this guy. Killed an agent in front of the agent's 12 year old daughter.

Fla. authorities search for federal agent's killer

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (AP) — Investigators are searching for the suspect who shot and killed a federal agent outside a busy South Florida post office.

Authorities say 52-year-old agent Donald Pettit was with his 12-year-old daughter when he was shot by a man during some sort of fight Tuesday morning in the post office's parking lot.

The gunman took off after firing at least one shot. No one else was injured.

Pettit's widow pleaded with the public for help Wednesday in finding the suspect. A reward for his capture has been increased to $275,000.

Authorities are looking for a man described as between 50 and 60 years old, six feet tall, medium to heavy build, with gray and white bushy hair and "distinctive sagging cheeks."

All non-felon citizens should be required to carry a gun at all times everywhere in the U.S...carnivals, picnics, the fucking zoo, you name it!!! We'd all be on a level playing field and if someone pissed you off you could just fucking shoot them. People would never argue and the country would have no problems. Also, criminals wouldn't have the security blanket of knowing that they're the only fucking ones with guns, as is the case in communist cities like Chicago where it's illegal to own a handgun :x (never seems to stop the fucking guy robbing your house, though!!!).

The Japanese have been doing this since the 80's. If your over 60 klicks (about 45 mph) on the freeway, you got a ticket in the mail, which you could pay at any post office or bank. The money went back into their transportation system. You don't see many potholes or faded lines anywhere over there and the trains and buses are for the most part nice and clean. I'm not sure about all the money going into the police department, too many pockets for it to disappear into.

There's more than enough money to fix the potholes in our roads. Corruption is the reason why there isn't enough money.

See above post as the answer why. Chicago/Crook County are prime examples.

True. And it's about what I figured. I work in one of the most affluent North suburbs and used to live in the biggest and most bustling NW burb.
Both had shitty roads with potholes that could swallow a car. Beautiful gorgeous homes and buildings... streets look like Ray Charles and Ronnie Milsap took jackhammers and dynamite to it.
